"A Year"

Dedicated to a year gone by, and everything about it that makes it a joy to remember, but so easy to weep heartfelt tears over in its wake. And also to that special someone of mine, wherever he is tonight.

This day has come again,
Another year gone by,
And still that wasn’t long enough,
For every laugh or tear to cry.

That night feels like yesterday,
So clear and dear to my heart,
Where simply just by calling me,
This love would get its start.

As those next weeks passed,
And I spent more time with you,
I was slowly able to realize,
This blissful feeling was purely true.

Whenever we’re together,
I’ve found that it is when,
I was at my best and happiest,
The way I hope to be again.

For I knew that it couldn’t last,
Even as I prayed for it to be,
After the sun set on those memories,
It all slipped away from me.

Your voice was confined to my dreams,
Your precious face ingrained on my soul,
My love for you chained to my heart,
A heart that is no longer whole.

Your name faded from my lips,
Though I screamed it in my head,
Clutching a pillow as I cried,
Whispering “I love you” before bed.

Then came the day I learned,
We were on different paths once more,
As fate had brought us together,
It now shoved us to the floor.

I don’t know if you miss me,
Or even care to see me again,
For while I love you deeply,
I could just barely be a friend.

Perhaps all you were doing,
Was trying to be kind,
To someone who was losing faith,
And to her true self was blind.

No matter what your purpose,
In reaching out to me,
You brought so much love to my life,
That maybe soon you’ll see.

For while this year has passed,
So much good and bad gone by,
This new road holds much hope,
For life, and love, you and I.
