"So You Might Understand"

For My Diamond in the Rough. If I could really send you that letter, this would be the poem I've written, of many, that I'd include in it.

I want to say I love you,
But feel I must apologize,
For any grief I may have brought you,
Any tears that filled your eyes.

I'm not sure if I really hurt you,
Or how, or why, and when,
But I want a brand new start,
So we can begin again.

Why I feel I've caused you trouble,
I'm not quite exactly sure,
But one thing I'm certain of,
I don't want to hurt anymore.

And I find that you're the only one,
Who's always able to,
Bring comfort to this wounded soul,
No matter the hell it's been through.

I have friends that try to do the same,
Favorite songs, family, and prayer,
But it's only you who never fails,
Even when you're not there.

Any memory of your face, your voice,
Or what you've done with me,
Can always chase those fears away,
And set my spirit free.

Why do you care about me?
What moves your heart to care,
For a soul who never reaches back,
And to your life seems unaware?

Why can't I overcome these chains,
That hush my words to speak?
Just so I can say, "Thank you,
You erase what makes me weak."

Just because you care for me,
Simply as a friend,
I've let go of such dreadful pain,
Those nightmares finally end.

Do you think I exaggerate,
What your friendship does for me?
That I make too much of simple acts,
All those smiles, and memories?

I mean this with my heart of hearts,
If not, why would I cry,
When I bid these golden days return,
And you back to my side?

I've learned from all those errors,
Never will I again,
Neglect to speak my heart to you,
Thanking you, my friend.

I've tried to return that love and care,
And all your acts of grace,
But so far I feel all I've done,
Was wrapped in one embrace.

One act in debt of many,
And I say I love you so.
I pray the feelings of my heart,
You may one day feel and know.

When I think of you I know,
I don't have to feel this way,
Like I have no control,
And deserve the grief and pain.

That's part of why I miss you,
Your absence stings my soul.
You make me feel complete and precious,
Broken pieces become whole.

You touch me like no other,
Sweet words they cannot tell,
This love I carry with me,
It's desires and dreams to quell.

I could come up with one million ways,
To say I love you so,
But only when you hear them,
Will they at last have chance to grow,

Beyond the confines of my heart,
Shared by you and me.
That simple bond forever strong,
Beautiful and free.

But if that day is not to come,
My plea to you is this,
Forgive my ignorance and frailty,
That denied my heart such bliss.

I pray every night for you,
May you be well and free of strife.
"God, please let him know how much,
He means to this girl's life."

Until we're together again,
I swear to do my best,
To see what more I can do,
To lay all fears to rest.

The next time I see you face to face,
Although I'm not sure how,
I'll look into your eyes and tell you this,
This is my solemn vow.

Just know you mean the world to me,
I pray your dreams come true.
Thank you for your tender care,
And forever, I love you...
