"UnLight's First Christmas"By: Jade Lightning, a.k.a. Inuyashas-hanyougirl
A story about UnLight, with some KnuxAmy.
-----
"UnDark and I will be gone for two weeks. I expect you to keep things in order around here until we return."
Mukot detailed instructions on how to manage the castle to his son UnLight, who followed him as they wandered from room to room down the twisted corridors. The Servant of Darkness was preparing for a trip to reunite with the other Servants of Darkness. Discussions were to be held on how they could further their take over of the universe of Light, returning it all to the Darkness they loved, while at the same time sharing what they had learned.
"I see. Do not worry Father; I am certain your leave is nothing I cannot manage. The Malevil Warriors will help out as well," UnLight said as they arrived in Mukot's bedroom.
The Servant of Darkness cackled as he retrieved his favorite robe. Pulling it over his arms, he looked to UnLight and said, "Indeed my son, but you cannot leave those empty-headed scatterbrains to their own devices. Even the warriors will sit around and neglect their training. I am sorry I cannot take you both with me, but you are the most capable of managing things around here, and I really only need one of you to show off to the other Servants."
UnLight sat down in a chair beside one of the windows, looking out over Talmor below them. He glanced up at his father and replied, "It is no problem Father. All will be well while you are gone."
Mukot fell silent for a moment. He gazed at UnLight, loving the older of his two remaining sons very dearly, despairing at the thought of having to leave him behind. He walked over to where UnLight sat in his chair and knelt down beside him, causing UnLight to return his attention to his father.
"Enjoy your time UnLight," Mukot said, "When we return, we're going to launch another assault on those fools. This is meant to be a vacation for UnDark and I, and I want it to be one for you as well. Those Malevils cannot afford to slack off, but you have my blessing to do what you wish."
The UnElemental was silent. He always kept silent his dislike for warfare, knowing that leading these assaults pleased his father, giving him that reason alone to continue with them. The thought of a break from it all was very exciting.
"I will, Father, and do not worry, all will be well," UnLight answered.
The father and son gazed at each other in this way for only a moment longer.
"Are you ready Father? I am anxious to go!"
Mukot closed his eyes briefly as he turned around to face his youngest son, UnDark, who now stood in the doorway, leaning in the frame.
Glancing once more at UnLight, with a sigh and a chuckle Mukot rose to his feet as he turned to UnDark. "Yes UnDark, we're ready to leave. I know you're excited to go on this trip," he replied.
"More than excited," UnDark said, standing up straight as he entered the room, "Getting to meet the other Servants of Darkness and be an example of your awesome power and skill is simply fabulous. All of that dark power, I feel I could burst."
UnLight rolled his eyes as he returned his gaze to the world outside. UnDark's antics annoyed him; he was the younger sibling willing to do or say whatever he could to steal attention away from the older brother. He knew this was nothing but a big production on UnDark's behalf, doing it only so it would ensure Mukot would continue to bring him along on these special missions, leaving UnLight behind time and time again.
Mukot however took it as genuine excitement, which achieved its desired affect in his heart. With a smile he said, "Well let's not let that energy go to waste my son!" He paused, shaking his head as he remembered something. "Wait here for a moment. I have to go make sure everything is in order with Zinthur, then we will be ready to go."
As the Servant of Darkness strode out of the room, UnDark replied, "Fine with me Father; I will be waiting for you!"
Mukot did not offer an answer and was soon on his way. Once he was gone, UnDark's smile twisted into a sneer as he growled softly. "Ugh I cannot WAIT to get out of here. The last battle was years ago. I need exercise…I need to taste blood!"
UnLight cringed. He hated that bloodthirsty nature.
"You do realize you won't be killing anyone while you're gone right?" UnLight asked, continuing to stare out the window as he rested his head in his palm, cradling it as his elbow balanced bent on the window sill.
UnDark turned to look at his brother, realizing how uninterested UnLight was in all of this. UnDark's twisted smile returned as he cackled, shaking his head. He walked over to sit beside UnLight, and as he did he said, "Oh brother of mine, you do not need to hide your jealousy; it is quite plain. Father will take me somewhere where we can torture people. At last we will get to spend quality time together…without certain people there to ruin it."
"If my jealousy is plain your subtlety is no better hidden," UnLight replied with a sigh.
With another cackle, UnDark sat down. "Oh dear brother, I am sorry. Perhaps I am the jealous one," he answered, "After all, you have always been the apple of Father's eye, killing so many, never failing a single mission he assigns to you. It should really be you going to show how wonderful he is should it not? You were the first one after all."
UnLight finally faced his brother, his orange eyes glazed over with apathy. "UnDark, do shut up. You do not amuse me. You think you're going off to this great meeting and will be loved by all. Only Father loves you as a son. Everyone else will love you only as a tool to be used to their own design. Once Father shares with them the secret of our creation, you and I will no longer be unique and wonderful. Father would just as soon have it that way. The more of us there are, the better," he explained.
UnDark blinked twice, almost shocked by UnLight's declaration. Slowly, he laughed, shaking his head. "You lie," he said at last, "Father will not show the blueprints to our creation. He loves us, and would never let us be replicated. You forget he is the greatest of them all. It is they who should desire to emulate him. He will not give them the shortcut to that kind of greatness and power."
Heaving a defeated sigh, UnLight turned back to the window and replied, "Whatever you say UnDark. I hope you enjoy your time with Father, and that whatever bloodlust you desire can be fulfilled."
"Don't be such a sore loser dear brother," UnDark said, nudging UnLight, causing him to turn and hiss at UnDark, sparking more laughter from him. "Easy now!" UnDark cried, "You can take this time and go do some killing yourself! It would make Father happy! Besides, now's the perfect time to do it."
UnLight looked back to UnDark, his interest finally piqued. He raised an eyebrow as he sat up. "Perfect? Why would the timing be perfect?" UnLight asked.
UnDark's envy green eyes lit up as his smile twisted even tighter. "Because dear brother, for those filthy lovers of Light on Eries, this time is a special time of year. It is when they celebrate that wretched holiday of hope and cheer known as Christmas. …Do you mean to tell me that after over two-thousand years of life you have never heard of its vileness? I'm shocked."
"Oh shut up UnDark…for some reason we are never down there this time of year," UnLight snorted, rising to his feet and walking over to the nearby bookshelf.
With a wild laugh, UnDark mimicked him and said, "Oh UnLight, don't be so serious! I only found out about it myself just recently. They celebrate more than just birthdays it seems."
Rolling his eyes as he took a book off the shelf, UnLight glared at him and said, "Oh do go on UnDark. I am so interested in why this would be the opportune time for me to lead an assault to harm them."
Slamming his hands down on UnLight's shoulders, causing the book UnLight was holding to fall to the ground, UnDark glared at him; the two brothers were eye to eye, staring each other down as UnDark continued to grin. "Any time is perfect to bring hurt to them my dear brother," he whispered in a low and menacing voice, his eyes continuing to gleam, "However, Christmas is the most perfect time, for it is the one time of year they try to make special for everyone, willing to put off any strife in favor of spreading cheer and good will. It disgusts me, their joy. It makes me want to kill them on the spot. Spilling a little blood and showing them they have no reason to be happy, nor do they even deserve to breathe, will teach them it is futile to try and spread joy. They'll all fall eventually, and when they do, the first thing I'm asking Father to do away with is that ridiculous holiday…that notion that there is anything worth living for besides the prospect of death."
Letting UnLight go, he spun around, cackling wildly. UnLight's eyes widened. He hated it when UnDark got like this. He would get so excited about hurting and killing people that his body would writhe with excitement it could barely hope to contain. He secretly hoped one day the joy would be too much for UnDark's heart and would be enough to kill him.
"Alas, it is not that day," UnLight whispered under his breath, rolling his eyes.
"Can't you taste it UnLight?!" UnDark cried out, "The thrill of victory, breaking bodies and crushing bones, spilling blood, watching it drip from your fingers. Show them that they are nothing but filth! Dammit I wish I could go with you! Oh what joy would be mine to show those bratty children that they are worth nothing, and can only hope to live in a world ruled by Darkness!"
Calming down, UnDark turned around, glaring at UnLight, his breathing heavy. "I hate you dear brother, I really do," he whispered.
"Perhaps you should take my place then?" UnLight asked.
UnDark grinned, shaking his finger as he said, "Oh no dear brother, I see through your trickery. You wish to use my love for murder to trick me out of going with Father."
UnLight rolled his eyes, playing along. "Yes UnDark. Ah damn, next time I shall try harder."
Another cackle escaped UnDark. Before he could speak, a Malevil Warrior named Gorlock came to the doorway and said, "Master UnDark, Master Mukot is waiting for you downstairs in the chapel."
A sneer crossed his lips as UnDark looked one more time to his brother. "Oh run along Gorlock you wretch. I shall be happy to free of you lazy fools! When I return I shall bring a new whip to train you by!" Running to the doorway, UnDark added, "Farewell dear brother of mine! You'd be wise to take my advice. Father would be most pleased…perhaps then you would take an even higher place in his heart!"
UnDark disappeared, running down the hallway to join Mukot. Both UnLight and Gorlock took this chance to groan in annoyance. The youngest son of Mukot was not much liked by anyone save his father alone. The Malevils hated him for his cruelty; UnLight grew annoyed with him for this and many other reasons.
"Damn him," UnLight muttered, "As if I'd intentionally go out to kill, especially during a time they hold dear."
Gorlock sighed as he entered the room. All of the Malevils loved UnLight for his patience, and because he was temperate and just, and never drove them hard in training or battle. Still, some aspects of him they did not understand, and his leniency towards their enemies was one of them. "Why do you take such mercy on those creatures Master UnLight? I'd hardly call them beautiful," Gorlock asked.
"Because Gorlock," UnLight said with a sigh, "When I was born, Father told me our enemies were Kalak, Shadow, and Arandor. Arandor is dead, Shadow is old and withered, not to mention my older brother. Kalak may never succumb to death, and so our only hope would be to chase him off. Father never explained to me that we would be hurting innocent people. That's no better than UnDark abusing all of you and pushing you so far simply for the pleasure of it."
Sitting down, Gorlock replied, "Maybe so Master, maybe so."
UnLight lowered his eyes. He walked over to where Gorlock was sitting, and sat down beside him. "Gorlock, I've always been able to come to you about things. Tell me, what is Christmas?"
Gorlock's eyes widened; "Well Master, I don't know of the true origins, but during this time of year, people decorate their homes with brightly colored lights and shades of red and green, and the center icon of the holiday is a richly decorate fir tree, under which they place beautifully wrapped presents for one another. It's this time of year that family and friends come together, and one that even enemies will push aside their rivalry for. People are at their most generous this time of year, extending love to the hated, comfort to the lonely, food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless, and give all they can to the needy. How can I explain it further? It is something I suppose one must experience for themselves. They hold it in very high regard."
"Experience for themselves…," UnLight repeated to himself softly. He thought about it all for a moment, and then rose to his feet. "Gorlock, tell everyone that they have these next couple of weeks off. I will tell Father we achieved all of our training when he returns. All of you may do what you will as long as the Warriors keep order around here."
"But Master? What are you saying?" Gorlock asked as he rose to his feet.
UnLight pulled on his shoes as he answered, "I'm going to Eries, but not to murder anyone. I-I couldn't kill someone at any time of year."
Gorlock stood beside UnLight and watched, feeling confused, "That's alright Master; as long as you lead us…that is what is important. I'm still confused. Why are you going to Eries?"
"Because, I need to know what Christmas is about. I must know why UnDark was so riled up with thoughts of ruining it," UnLight answered.
"In UnDark's defense, Master, he gets riled up any time he thinks of murder," Gorlock answered.
UnLight laughed; "Don't defend UnDark. He is bloodthirsty; so bloodthirsty one day it may cost him his own," he explained. Turning to Gorlock he smiled and added, "Please…this is a curiosity I must satisfy. Two-thousand years of life has not been enough for me to soak up everything, and this is something I must do. I pride myself in knowing more than anyone, even Shadow, save Father and Kalak alone. You enjoy this break I'm giving you, and when Father returns, you can cover for me, and I will cover for you all."
Gorlock looked uneasy. However, his love for UnLight was great, and he was willing to go along with the plan for UnLight's sake alone. He nodded and replied, "You go and do what you must Master. All of the Malevil Warriors, including myself, will keep things in order until you return. Be careful as always."
"Thank you Gorlock," UnLight replied with a nod. As he left the room he added, "I'll be back a day or two before Father and UnDark return. Don't worry about me!"
As UnLight left, Gorlock hung his head and whispered, "I always worry about you, UnLight. It always seems like you're looking for whatever way you can to end this battle so everyone is happy. Mukot is growing closer to UnDark with each passing day. If you keep up with this even-minded attitude…soon you'll have no higher regard in Mukot's heart than the worst of our own. What is wrong with you Master? Please tell us."
UnLight quickly made his way to Eries. He often went on journeys alone to Eries, as well as the other eleven planets in Starlynn Galaxy, just to learn more about them. His mind was always eager to drink up more knowledge, and after over two-thousand years of life, it shocked him that he had never heard of the holiday called Christmas.
He arrived in the Emerald Hills on the Salas continent, the same continent that everyone involved in these wars lived their lives, save Jade and her circle of friends who lived on Spirit Island, and where most of the battles themselves took place. On a few occasions UnLight visited the other continents, including the Folso continent, and one day he intended to go back to them.
However, his mission was here. Instead of grassy hills, UnLight was surrounded by an endless sea of snow. He knew all about snow and how it was symbolic of the winter season. "Perhaps that is why they associate Christmas with snow," UnLight thought to himself, "I have no idea how or when, but I know I've heard the phrase, 'White Christmas' somewhere before."
He stood there for a brief moment, taking in the almost breathtaking scene around him. As he breathed, he watched as the air chilled his breath into a cloud. He rubbed his shoulders. Even with his thick coat of fur, he felt awfully chill. Closing his eyes for a moment, he called for a warm scarf, a black jacket, and tall, red boots to come to him, and in no time they materialized before him.
As he pulled on his boots, he chuckled softly and said, "I should have expected as much," shaking his head. He caused his shoes to disappear, returning them home, before pulling the jacket over his shoulders and wrapping the scarf around his neck. He stood up, looking around as he wondered where to start his investigation.
There, in the distance, he saw a familiar town.
"Station Square…"
He took a breath, wondering if he could get away with going there or not. He knew that Shadow had a safe house there, and that the entire group of them frequented that town on a regular basis. He could even see Angel Island floating in the distance to the East.
"No way…surely I'll be spotted," UnLight murmured. Then, his orange eyes lit up. A sigh escaped him. "UnLight you idiot, you are a shape-shifter. Simply take on a form they will not recognize," he said to himself.
Yet UnLight was too lazy to think up an elaborate form to deceive everyone with. He could take on the form of anything he pleased, even a different age or gender entirely, although he was never comfortable taking on such drastic changes for very long. Though he was more than capable of such deceit, UnLight settled for a very simple set of changes in order to disguise himself.
Using his power, he first changed the way his tuft of fur ruffled on his chest. The tips on his ears morphed into ear tips one would expect to see on a cat, and he also changed his tail to that of the cat species; his hair grew to a standard length, long enough so he could pull it all back, even his signature khaki colored locks on each side of his face, into a long ponytail. Finally, he lightened his fur to a brighter shade of milky brown, before summoning up a pair of dark glasses to hide the one thing he couldn't change, his orange eyes.
He put on the dark glasses, growling softly. "It's too cloudy for these things; such a vice are my orange eyes, such an uncommon color. If anyone sees them, all of these changes won't do me a bit of good," he muttered.
Once he was ready, he took off running for Station Square. He simply had to figure out what this Christmas season was all about.
For the next week and a half, he observed everything from a safe distance. Hiding in alleys, on rooftops, and in the shadows, he watched people go shopping, having what looked like overwhelming joy even in the freezing weather. There were carolers singing Christmas songs up and down the street, and people dressed in white and red suits ringing bells on the corners. UnLight quickly learned they were emulating the form of Christmas' center icon, a fellow known as Santa Claus.
The idea of a strange person sneaking into one's home, let alone squeezing down a chimney, for those who had them, just to leave presents, was somewhat puzzling for UnLight. Yet, he saw this idea tickled the entire city with glee, especially the children, and this was something that warmed UnLight's heart. He never understood why his father felt the need to hurt innocent people, especially children, and also couldn't understand why exactly his heart was moved to care for them. Over the years, this compassion had only expanded, only getting more intense when his enemies began to have children of their own.
Knuckles and Amy were the ones to start this new generation with their son Mikomi, who was a tiny baby during the last major confrontation. He knew other children were alive now, but had not yet seen them, since the past several years were spent recovering energy and power lost in the last battle.
He wondered how little Mikomi and the rest would spend this Christmas.
With only three days left before Mukot and UnDark returned to Talmor, UnLight felt he had learned everything there was to know about Christmas. He planned to stick around long enough for the city's Christmas parade to run through town, before heading home to Talmor.
The parade was the day before Christmas Eve. Thousands of people crowded the sides of the snow covered streets to watch colorful floats pass them by. UnLight was amazed by how early in the morning some people turned out, just to get a great view. When it started, UnLight followed it at the back of the crowds, sticking with the first floats, prepared to stop at the end to watch the rest of it.
As he walked, he kept his head down, only looking up once in awhile to keep himself oriented. He had hardly taken those dark glasses off the entire time he was there, and they were beginning to bug him. As he reached up to adjust them, he slipped on a patch of ice, falling hard to the ground.
His eyes were closed. He felt moderate pain, but what annoyed him most was the fact that he had fallen at all. "Dammit," he muttered, "Well done."
Before he could pick himself up, he heard something.
"Uh oh, are you okay mister?"
"Shh…he looks like he's blind."
"What?" UnLight asked, opening his eyes, still hidden behind the sunglasses.
Unknown to the owners of the voices, he could see them right before him, and he was shocked by what he saw.
One child he recognized immediately. It was the son of Knuckles and Amy, Suta-Mikomi, standing beside a much smaller, pink and red hedgehog with lime green eyes. She didn't look like the second one to speak, for she stood simply gazing at him as a small child does, with one finger curled over her lips.
The owner of the second voice made herself known, kneeling down beside her two children. It was Amy, the one Mukot hated the most after Kalak and Shadow, for the Light of Arandor was ever present within her.
"I am so sorry," she said, "Are you alright?"
UnLight realized that this belief that he was blind could work to his advantage. As he tried to rise to his feet, he replied, "I am fine. I think I slipped on a patch of ice." He was unafraid to speak, for he was able to disguise his voice as well.
Amy took his hand and stood him up. She gazed at him for a moment, her eyes somewhat sad. "You really are blind aren't you? What are you doing here by yourself?" she asked.
"Yes…," UnLight answered slowly, "I was never with anyone to begin with," he added with a soft chuckle. Rubbing the back of his head, he continued, "It's no big deal. After so long you learn how to get around. The ice is very pesky this time of year."
"You don't use a cane mister?" little Mikomi asked, looking up at him.
"Mikomi, that's not nice," Amy replied, looking down at him.
The little pink hedgehog giggled, while Mikomi blushed red and said, "It's not funny Amarie," as he turned to his sister. As she stopped laughing, Mikomi looked to UnLight and said, "Sorry mister, I didn't mean to be rude."
UnLight laughed. "It's quite alright. How could I possibly take offense?"
Amy giggled, but only briefly. She looked back to him and said, "Are you really out here all by yourself? Where do you live?"
"Well…," UnLight started, unsure of how to continue.
His unfinished phrase hung in the air. He was beginning to wonder how he'd answer her.
Before he could continue to struggle with an answer, another voice entered the conversation.
"There you three are. These crowds are ridiculous."
UnLight had to suppress a gasp. He turned and from behind his sunglasses he could see one of his biggest enemies, Knuckles, the Son of Strength.
Amy shook her head as she smiled. "Sorry Knuxie. We moved to get a better spot," she explained.
Little Amarie giggled as Knuckles picked her up to hold her. "Oh? And how is your daughter supposed to see from back here, or your son for that matter?" Knuckles asked with a grin.
"On Daddy's shoulders, that's how!" Mikomi cried with a giggle.
Knuckles laughed, bending down to kneel. "Is that so?" he asked Mikomi, "In that case, you'd better climb on before you miss anymore."
Mikomi laughed as he climbed onto his father's shoulders. The echidna rose slowly, having to balance his son on his back, while holding his daughter in his arms. Once he was standing, he finally noticed UnLight standing beside Amy. "Hey Amy, who are you talking to?" he asked.
Amy laughed and answered, "I don't know, I was just finding out." Turning back to UnLight, she asked, "Don't worry about answering that first question; I think I understand. How about you tell me your name?"
UnLight assumed that she thought he was homeless. That was one hard question out of the way. However, this new one wasn't any easier.
"Calipsis," he answered at last, "My name is Calipsis."
The pink hedgehog smiled. "Such an interesting name!" she replied, "My name is Amy, and this is my husband Knuckles, and our two children, Mikomi and Amarie."
Knuckles nodded in greeting, and then asked, "So how did you meet him?"
"He slipped on the ice," Amy started, "…he couldn't see where he was going," she added, putting slight emphasis on the word see.
UnLight laughed and said, "Do not forget I am not deaf my lady. I'm not uncomfortable with people knowing of my impediment, seeing as it is hard to hide anyway. Better people know about it then not know about it I always say."
"My lady?" Knuckles asked. With a laugh he added, "Man, you sound just like Shadow does. You must be into ancient history or something. In Shadow's case, he IS ancient history."
While Knuckles and Mikomi laughed at the joke, Amy rolled her eyes and said, "That's not nice Knuckles. You don't have to be jealous that Shadow and Calipsis are caring enough to practice chivalry. You could take a hint."
The echidna and his son stopped laughing. "Oh whatever Amy. I'm going to watch the parade," he answered.
"It's alright, I better get going," UnLight replied.
"Oh no," Amy said suddenly. She reached for UnLight and grabbed his arm, causing him to let out a gasp. The Light within her sent tingles up and down his arm. For a being with no Light within him, such contact was harrowing.
He turned back to her, trying to get control of his body, fearing that if he lost that control then his original form would return and he'd be exposed. "It's alright," he said again, "I've enjoyed speaking with you, but I should go and let you enjoy the outing."
Amy shook her head. "Listen, let us take you out to eat with us. It's the least we could do."
It was true what UnDark said; everyone was more charitable around this time of year.
"Really, you don't have to," UnLight stuttered. He was desperate to get his arm back from Amy, fearing that the more that her Light interacted with him, the sooner he would lose control of his shape-shifting.
"No, I insist," Amy replied.
UnLight paused. He knew enough about Amy to know how persistent she could be, and that when she got her mind set on something she would be hard pressed to abandon it until she got her way. He realized that if he consented to her wish, something others in the past would have been wise to emulate, that she would let go of his arm, and he could recover control.
He nodded slowly. "Well, if you insist, then I will come along," he answered.
She quickly smiled, finally releasing his arm. "Oh good! Stick here with us, and once the parade is over, we'll go out to eat. Maybe you can tell us more about yourself!"
Amy then turned to her husband and children, going to stand beside them as the parade continued to roll by. UnLight slowly shuffled closer to her, simply so she would know he was nearby. He felt his body begin to relax now that the Light was no longer interfering with his own aura. However, simply being this close to her was a challenge. Being close to both her and Knuckles was even harder, for when they came together, Arandor was embodied in their spirits, and Arandor, in his life, was the Light itself, something UnLight lived without.
He wondered what kept him from running away. For some reason, he wanted to see this through. The two creatures Mukot hated the most save Shadow and Mukot, had just invited UnLight to dinner. Granted, they had no idea who he was, but then again, UnLight couldn't understand what they had done to cause his father to hate them so much.
Was such hatred warranted? Was UnLight able to overlook the fact that they were supposed to be his enemies all because of this holiday? Was it like smoke in the air, this feeling and need to love one another?
Or was it because UnLight felt no need to hate them at all?
Once the parade was over, he walked down the streets, slowly following Knuckles and Amy. He watched as they laughed, smiled, and played with their two children. The joy was all too clear. He could see people smile as they passed them by. The happiness was infectious. UnLight found even his lips curled a little.
"What's wrong with me?" he thought to himself, "Yes, I don't believe we should hurt the innocent, but, does that mean I relish their joy? Where UnDark feeds off death, pain, and horror, I feed off laughter, warmth, and joy. What…what is wrong with me?"
"They are my enemies."
"Calipsis?" a small voice asked.
UnLight opened his eyes. Little Mikomi was staring up at him.
They were at a diner eating supper. UnLight was surprised to find he had eaten most of his meal, though he was silent through most of it.
He remembered telling Amy and Knuckles that while he was blind he lived alone, and with the exception of ice patches, there wasn't much to trouble him. He was thankful he was able to carry on a conversation while he retreated to the corners of his mind, wondering why he was there to begin with.
"Well, I admire you buddy," Knuckles replied, finishing his meal. "You're tough, but you sound like a guy that won't let anyone get you down," he added.
Amy smiled. "Where are you going to spend Christmas?" she asked.
UnLight was still looking at Mikomi. He suddenly felt violently sick. He realized that Mikomi and his baby sister Amarie would be the next victims of Mukot's malice. Did they deserve that?
He looked to Amy, and found his lips curled in a smile. "I have someone I will be meeting my lady, as I do every year," he said at last.
"That's good," Amy replied, "Nobody should be alone for Christmas."
"Not even Shadow?" Knuckles teased with a grin.
"Knuckles, that's not nice," Amy replied, groaning at her husband, "Besides, he has Rouge and Amberly."
Knuckles laughed. "Sorry Amy, really. I'm happy for Shadow. He deserves a break after all he's been through, and you're right, nobody should be alone on Christmas," Knuckles replied.
"Shadow has a daughter," UnLight thought to himself, "No doubt Father will want her dead too."
"But does that make it right?"
UnLight stood up and said, "I really should go. My friend will be waiting for me. I-I thank you for your hospitality and kindness."
He didn't give Amy and Knuckles much time to answer him before turning to leave. Little Mikomi and Amarie, however, leapt to their feet and ran after him, each of them grabbing on to one of his legs and holding him tightly.
"What's this?" UnLight whispered to himself, looking down at them.
Amarie giggled as she looked up at him. Mikomi did the same and said, "Merry Christmas Calipsis! We just…wanted to give you a hug before you left."
UnLight felt he couldn't move. He felt that control being challenged again, but not because of Arandor's Light.
"I…I see that, but why?" he asked.
As Mikomi and Amarie stood up, Mikomi took his sister's hand and said, "Just because…it's Christmas…everyone should feel loved."
"Everyone? What if he knew I was his enemy?"
Amy and Knuckles caught up to them. As Knuckles picked up his son, he laughed and said, "That's true Miko, but don't forget, we've got to try and extend love to everyone, even our enemies, all year long."
"Really Daddy?" Mikomi asked.
"Yes Mikomi," Amy replied, picking up Amarie, "That's what Christmas is all about, and not just extending love this time of year, but reminding us to do so all year long, to everyone, because everyone deserves it, no matter who they are."
Amarie giggled, hugging her mother's neck. Mikomi laughed and said, "I guess that makes sense. Yeah…I'll remember that."
Knuckles smiled at his son, then looked back to Calipsis, only to realize he was now gone.
"Where did he go?" Knuckles asked.
Amy looked around and said, "Oh dear, he must have slipped off while we were talking to Mikomi."
Mikomi giggled. "It's okay Mommy. He's just gone to share the love for Christmas with everyone," he explained.
In reality, UnLight had run out of the restaurant as soon as Amy got done explaining Christmas to her son. After all he had seen those past two weeks, such a simple answer to what Christmas was about, the reason UnDark hated it so much, didn't make much sense to UnLight at first.
He watched the families in town as Christmas Eve came, and Christmas morning finally arrived, making sure to stay better hidden. He watched as children opened presents, families grew closer, and people extended love to the homeless and hungry. He watched as many headed off to church, others who went to spend time with families, and others still who worked in soup kitchens from sunup to sundown.
Snow fell that Christmas Day. The happiness was like electricity in the air.
As Christmas Day ended, UnLight knew he needed to go home. He returned to his original form, shedding his guise known as Calipsis, and returned to Talmor.
The Malevils were happy to see him again. Somehow he felt better now that he was home, but still, he felt troubled.
"I am different," UnLight thought to himself, "At last, I realize, I'm not cut from the same cloth as the rest of them. This joy that they hate…I want to understand."
As he was sitting in his bedroom, in a chair by his window, staring out at Talmor just as he did every day, Gorlock came to see him.
"Master UnLight?" he asked.
"Come inside Gorlock," UnLight said without looking at him.
The Malevil Warrior slowly entered the room, sitting beside his master. "Are you alright Master? You've been so quiet; you seem troubled. Was your trip alright?" he asked.
UnLight chuckled softly as he shook his head. He closed his eyes.
"I am different. I will find out why."
Looking to Gorlock he answered, "I want the troops to do some exercises. Nothing too strenuous, but just enough so Father and UnDark don't think we've lazed about these past two weeks. Take care of this for me Gorlock. I will be down to assist you in a moment. We…we want to be ready for the next assault."
Gorlock nodded as he rose to his feet. "If you say so Master. I hope you are alright."
As Gorlock left, UnLight hung his head. The word "assault" tasted bitter; he could feel his legs turn into jelly where Mikomi and Amarie had hugged them, realizing that Christmas would be their last carefree time for awhile.
Did they deserve that?
Was everyone supposed to love each other all year long?
UnLight didn't know why he was different, but he did understand one thing. Christmas was meant to teach everyone to love each other, no matter what stood to divide them, not just for one month out of the year, but all year long.
He had learned something, and it was enough to calm him, for now.
He stood up and laughed, calling after Gorlock as he said, "I'm alright Gorlock, really. I will come with you to assist in the training."
As he followed Gorlock, UnLight found he was finally able to put it all behind him, even as he kept what he learned close to his troubled heart.
"I just had my first Christmas, but what I learned, will never leave me, even as I struggle to understand it."
