I'm using octane part-time - there is lots of limits. But I'm surprised that it should only be HDRI. I will have to try that!

Hmm - if the scene gets to complex octane just gives up. Though have lot of VRAM and a fast video card. It is limiting if you have to keep the complexity of your idea in sync with your video card.
