Description
...While I pondered, weak and weary, these lonely Ravens, nothing more. For the last 8 weeks, I sat an looked at the first pour, and had not the energy to
lift a brush to finish it. Our trip to the North Shore of Superior, brought me in contact
with a beautiful Raven, stuffed by a taxidermist, and found to photograph easily in the
Interpretive Center at Gooseberry Falls. That became the catalyst for this
WATERCOLOR with some PRISMACOLOR PENCIL, on 18x24" Cold Pressed Paper

Yeah, I took the photo and really tweeked it in Phtoshp, to bring out
as much feather details possible...I just didn't want to use black paint.
That's for getting into that...and writing to tell me. Richard

Thanks Val....your beautiful comment reminded me of how dad would never miss the
Lawrence Welk Show, every Saturday night! This rather mild Raven painting has exceeded all my expectations....
Have a great day, .. .and thank you for everything!

Going to try to start a new painting today. And I'm thinking
of posting a few more bird shots. Although I'm no saint, I still like the
feeling of identifying with Francis of Assisi ~ and my commune with the
birds. Thanks for your kind friendship and understanding!

I'm with you all the way regarding that Richard - I, too identify with Assisi. If I could, I'd tend to all the animals in the world. My husband and my dream was to run a bird sanctuary at one time. So many "pet" birds, especially the larger parrots are abandoned by their owners. The larger birds tend to get rehomed an average of three times in their lives. Having had a Macaw (ours being that "third" home,) my heart goes out to those loving, proud and brilliant beings who bond and then are abandoned. They suffer terrible emotional losses. Never went for it due to health issues, but my heart yearns for it. I must admit I have a much greater bond with the beasts of legs, tails and wings than I do the two-legged kind. Perhaps my 25 years as a therapist have left me somewhat unenthused. Animals are so much clearer in their communications and a whole lot more entertaining in their simplicity. I have an old bread tin outside for seed. This morning I woke to three fat mourning doves settled within, side by side, on top of the seed, sunning themselves. It was such a picture of contentment, as well as "getting along with," I had to laugh. Yeah - I get it. I haven't "officially" gotten to your new birdy pics, but they look wonderful.

I don't have the energy to match your beautiful story, word for word, but...
for many years, I was the proud owner of several different parrots: a counure,
a ring-necked parakeet (nasty bird) a lilac-crowned amazon, an orange cheeked
amazon who had a partner (not sexually) of a very mean yellow headed amazon.
Those last two, I still had when I married, and my wife didn't like them in our
bedroom, so we gave them to pair of vets who specialized in parrots. We gave
them to the vets, who sent them to the U of M to determine their sex, and we
never heard more. But I'm glad we did that. These species, whose names should
be capped above, are growing increasingly rare. Thanks for your story....I was
glad to have some time together with parrots. Amazing birds... The lilac crowned
amazon, I took outside one day, during a picnic of gathering people and kids.
His wings were clipped, but when the kids ran up to me to see the bird, HE FLEW
AWAY. I never found him, and in a state of depressed shock and disbelief, I presumed
him dead, in the heat of July.

Awwwwwww, that's so sad. I'm glad you've had good experiences along with the not so good. They require so much attention, and so many of them do not respond as pets, most people end up rehousing them. The bonding issue is problematic, since rarely with parrots bond with both spouses - one is often seen as an interloper and Uh Oh!

Thanks for the lovely comments, Lawrence. I saw some live Ravens in Alaska, last September. They're bigger than crows, which we have in excess in Eden
Prairie....and if you FAVED my piece, doubly thanks. I'm having a hard time keeping up on this one....stay safe:

....as opposed to CAW, CAW. Many folks in Eden Prairie
hate the crows...why? because they are awakened by them
in the morning. Hogwash,....I was awakened by Robins this
morning at 4:30AM....what a pleasant way to wake up!!!
Crows are awesome...wish one would learn to trust me,
and hang out with me....BTW...have you ever seen the work
of Beth Moon?
Google: ANCIENT AFRICAN TREES with MILKY WAY... and be
amazed. Check out her website. She spent a year getting
to 'know' a Raven couple. She prints using the Platinum technique.

I have been watching your recent bird photos and wishing you the best for your recovery, Richard.
So lovely to see a painting evolve from the feeling of those nature photos (even those this particular model was of the stuffed variety...lol).

So glad you've been keeping up. Photography has been my go-to resource
lately, while I'm undergoing the radiation. They weren't kidding when they told me
I'd be energy-less. I'm not really sure my last painting was influenced by all the
birds I've been shooting...maybe a little. Truly, I think I took a rather safe way
to complete the watercolor ~ I was hoping for something a little more fantasy-like.
But, I suppose my creative spirit was a little tired too. Hopefully, (they tell me
4-6 weeks!) my energy should be returning. I've lately been inspired by (and you can Google
ANCIENT AFRICAN TREES and STARS of Beth Moon You will be inspired.
Now I'm on a quest to try to capture the Milky Way....but it's gotta be really dark!!
Thanks for writing Yvette....hope all's well with you!!! Richard

Thank you...she's a Big Act to follow...soooo I'm taking it step by step. Perhaps a newer and slightly different camera, a tripod for sure...then working during the middle of the night, in pitch darkness...that's for starters.
The trees she lit lovingly....with flashlights....that's step two...
Lol....

I am learning, but to slow down. During the eight weeks
of radiation treatments, I couldn't find any creative energy to
paint ~ hence all the photos, recently. The doctors say the
energy will return; give it 6-8 weeks. I'm trying to be patient.
But something tells me to be in a hurry...not good. It doesn't
work that way. Thanks for your lovely words, Yvette....
