Description
This is the setup shot for the bikini shoot in the Maldives. As you can see... pretty simple really! Just careful balancing of the strobes and the ambient light (strobes controlled with an SU-800 IR controller, which also requires careful positioning of the IR receiver windows on the slaves when you're outdoors).Deliberately ungelled and bare strobes - I find the SB800s don't have the power to do what I want through an umbrella, and in any case I like the effect of the bare strobes. You can control the coverage using the zoom function on the strobe.

You're very welcome Β By balancing I actually meant light levels, but I think you are asking about the stands falling over? Β I dug the legs into the sand as much as I could, but the water here was incredibly still so there wasn't any risk really. Β I would use sandbags these days! Β And I wouldn't try this anywhere with serious waves or tides
It's odd looking back at these photos - my style has evolved so much since then!

nice use of flash lights, at outdoor i use paper to make a tube around the flashelight for the rear light and at front a umbrella (umbrella + wind it's the perfect flash killer!!!) or a softbox of lastolite.

Yep a brolly wasn't really an option in the sea! lol. You're spot on about the makeshift snoot, though funnily enough I find that focusing the speedlights - long focal length for the hairlight, obviously, wider spread on the front - does a good job in a pinch

Hehehe...do I look mad?! Hmmm...must work harder on hiding inner feelings lol...I wasn't mad though really, you couldn't be mad at anything when you're in such a gorgeous and amazing place.

Yessss.... Luckily the water was pretty calm; no spray to speak of. The stands got a good rinsing in fresh water, but the strobes were fine (and luckily I didn't drop the camera!)

lol yeah she does doesn't she! "Oi! Shoot me, not the flashes!" lol
It was an amazing trip, truly - 2 weeks in Paradise and a whole bunch of lovely photographs to take on top. We both felt very lucky indeed to be able to go there.

That comment reminds me of something Phoenix said, rather pointedly: That sometimes men seem more interested in the "gadgetry" aspect of photography than the images themselves...

Speaking as a self-confessed gadget fetishist (well, in the same way as most girls are with shoes... I don't actually like rubbing up against the gadgets, if you see what I mean), I will confess to the occasional moment of liking the means as much as the end, yes

Actually yes I do... maybe to another resort in the Maldives, and maybe not for a while (not cheap, believe me!) but we're hooked...
