The "well" is so innocuous, with that scripty writing. Quite a contrast to the upended traffic light. Love this one.

Thanks very much. This one was put together extremely intuitively, even for me - I put it aside for a few days after completing it, and then saw that it worked in very interesting ways.

Intuitively yes, perhaps, but I can't help but opine that "intuitive" is a state that is open to so many degrees of being. I see "intuitive" that is like children's scrawl and then your type of "intuitive," which is more like internal cylinders firing up. Perhaps the word has taken on a bad rap with me because of how Working Intuitively has become a sort of sacred pilgrimage in the mixed-media world. More like a sacred cow, if ya ask me.

Aha! I don't read the right journals, I didn't know that word had become a shibboleth though I might have suspected. I hear you and I will have to come up with something else. I like internal cylinders firing up!

maps. found them always so fascinating. not the slightest idea why

RichardLeach In reply to EintoeRn [2012-10-10 23:27:28 +0000 UTC]
they promise so much, i think - we can hold them in our hands but studying them will help us master a vast area...
no substitute for them either - a couple weeks ago coming back from Vermont i missed a turn on the highway, we were going by a google maps print-out, which is just a list of turns to take, so if you miss... (and no GPS in my car) - but i reached under the seat, pulled out a 15 year old atlas and

Does the well being comes from big numbers full of zeros? Some attempt to reach that for sure.

RichardLeach In reply to djailledie [2012-10-08 16:46:57 +0000 UTC]
Definitely attempted. More than big numbers needed in the end, most likely.

Great work Richard. Well is a deep subject... you might fool everyone and go up the gravity well.

I just read a book The Map and the Territory by Michel Houellebecq. The map is more important than territory

The cartography works very well in this piece. With its color and shape, it ties all the collage elements together.
Well done!!!

Thank you very much, Seth. I tried to do enough here but not too much - good to hear that it worked.

well done, Richard! the map adds a special touch and i agree with that 3D look that Bev mentions

thanks very much, LΓΊcia, and for seconding Bev's comment. a 3D effect on a map is interesting when you think about it because a map is flat by definition... which i wasn't thinking when i made it, i was working by feeling as usual. i have some more of these maps

m-lucia In reply to RichardLeach [2012-09-20 22:24:51 +0000 UTC]
you're welcome, Richard. i guess that the 3D effect comes from the depth created by the illusion of distance - the "land" represented in tha map is far away, while the other collaged elements are closer, on a first plan... i'm sure you will do great pieces with the other maps

Has a three-dimensional look that I wasn't expecting.

Thanks! Yes, I do tend to stay in the picture plane, don't I? But if the scraps point in another direction I will go there.

I always thought you wanted your collages to look flat. But now I think you might want to do some more 3-D.
π: 0 β©: 1
RichardLeach In reply to Colornote [2012-09-20 01:19:58 +0000 UTC]
My basic impulse is for flatness - because I think graphically rather than pictorially. But 3-D does creep in and I can see that it's effective - there could be more.

ah, the map!
have you read Houellebec's Territory?
you know i've been for DAYS like EAGER to make a collage, don't know why. but i couldn't because of neck pain... today i'm better so i think i will go for it!

I haven't read it - looks interesting at amazon! do you recommend it?
and - you have that restless collage-making urge! yes! i hope you did or will!

Izaaaaa In reply to RichardLeach [2012-09-19 23:44:48 +0000 UTC]
i highly recommend it! the main character is an artist and he starts his career with something involving maps... why i thought of it when i saw your work!
i didn't! i spent over an hour looking for an image for a journal i wanted to make! i didn't find it and it drove me crazy so i went and annoyed my boyfriend who was watching TV!
but i still have the urge so it's only a matter of time!!

RichardLeach In reply to Izaaaaa [2012-09-20 01:16:05 +0000 UTC]

oh the journal, that happens, i had an idea for one and i've spent way too much time on it and still it hasn't come together! glad the collage urge is still there, i know i'll enjoy it when you do make it

very elegant. and beautiful background.
the upper part reminds me of a woman's bust. at the thumb it was a woman's back!
