LOL. Oh man. I appreciate your words (and fave) but I'm not much of a fan of this one. The blue looks nice with the red, and for me that's it. xD

Just an idea.

Cheers, bro!

Wow, what a huge reply. Well, ok, I'm gonna have breakfast first. xD *om nom nom nom* ... Ah, back. Nothing beats a good coffee in the morning :3 Also, excuse me for not answering to all chunks of text, but of course I did read and I'm thankfull for them xD.

Oh please, the "you're not qualified" wouldn't hold even if I actually thought like that. It's the same as saying that people who don't draw can't critique if something looks off or such. You say it's inconsistent and you're probably right. I'll try to be more carefull next time around.

Yeah the face is terribly empty. About the highlights, they are there as I've gained the habit of drawing them on the face. You can faintly see a white in her lip (it should be more obvious, I know). The cheeks... I guess I forgot about those this time, but usually I do that. I usually lose focus towards the end of the drawing xD.

You praise me too much. xD Ups, yeah, that was a lame error on my part, my bad. And you thought right, those critiques were very much appreciated. :3

Ugh, ok, this would get out of hand quickly, so let's call a truce. You don't say I'm better than you and I don't say you're better than me. xD And yeah, I'm still trying things out and probably will be for a long time. I just cell shade a lot because it's easier...? xD This time around I used two shadow tones though, so it would give more dept to the picture.

Sorry about the huge replies T.T I have a habit of leaving replies bigger than the original comments because I reply to almost every paragraph and then go off on a tangent XD Ah coffee in the morning, it's like a morning ritual XD Don't worry about answering everything, I tend to ramble pointlessly.

Only some of the shading is out of place with the rest, it's not like its all completely random so there's no major issue XD

Ah, sorry I can't see them. Maybe a couple of subtle additions to keep the simple look you're going for but to make it a little less blank. Like a touch of soft shading on the nose or darken under where the bottom lip would be or the top lip or a touch of shading on the eyelid/brow area. Not sure really, just a couple of suggestions XD

Nah...you can't praise someone too much if you genuinely mean it XD It's when you're straining for good comments trying to see positives that aren't really there that one praises too much XD

XD Ha sounds like a deal to me. We could probably go on forever otherwise XD You know, I wonder if a true artist ever truly "settles" with their colouring and method. I mean really what's the point in that? It's no fun if you stop experimenting because you can no longer grow as an artist.

Ahah xD. Yeah, I usually make big replies too in the same manner, randomly bringing other subjects. Yesh, coffee is my bad habit. I don't smoke or drink (well, at special familly events, I'm not one for going out at night >: ) so I have coffee as my addiction. :3

I usually shade those areas, this time around I dunno what happened lol. I guess shading the hair is a little more inside my confort zone. xD

Heh, that's pretty true. It's as I said with my cel shading, it gets repetitive if you do the same thing over and over (in my case, add the frustration of not improving xD ).

A nice way of learning a bit about digital painting imo is what I did today: traced a picture that I liked and painted over it, trying to reconsctruct the original picture with colors (though I did a sloppy job, shame on me >: ).

Oooh *O* very nice! I like this a lot, it looks great! The anatomy is great, the expression is soft and sweet, the colouring is great (especially on the hair) and I want to know how you got that awesome faint blue hue on the right hand side.

A couple of small tips with this one though. You've made the same mistake I always make and that's an inconsistent light source. It's particlarly clear in the stomach, hair and (our view of) her right arm. Your pattern of shading is a bit odd. In some places you'll do this awesome variation, intense shading like in the hair and on the shorts - LOVE how you've done the shorts) but then do very little on the face and skin.

Anyway.Done mass commenting for now. I love your work and am really excited to see you progress. You're better than me, that's for sure XD

RidleyWright In reply to Sarky-Sparky [2009-12-17 17:21:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks... About the faint blue hue.... Luck, I guess? Haha. I just threw random brushes over a simple digital background 'till it looked cool. I like the contrast, but I think I... well, I dunno how to say this in technical terms, but Yoko got a little too dark with my messing around levels and filters and whatever.

About the inconsistent shading... Uh, well, I guess? Not doubting you, it's just one of those things were I can't see it all that clear. While it certainly is inconsistent with the background (it's the total opposite for most part), if the light came from our left, at least her stomach would look like that (with a lot more detail, granted). Her right hand... yeah, not so much.

Heh, yeah, you're totally right. But the face is so hard to give detail too. Mainly because what I try to achieve is simplicity like I see in many other cases, but there's probably a trick I haven't figured out yet. Thanks for pointing it out though.

Thanks so much for the trouble of commenting and giving tips and faving. ;__; I'll try to improve so your time wasn't wasted. >:

..."You're better than me...". Oh no u didn't. I certainly don't think so, not even by a milestone (is that how you say it? XD). You remember a bit of myself. You seem to be very strict on yourself and not as much on others. But by no means am I better than you.

From what I've seen, our styles don't really match (I didn't see a lot of examples, but some of your characters remember me a more american-ish style[ok, I checked better, you seem to do a lot of styles, I was refering to "Les Noveaux Heros"]), but that stuff in digital of Shadow and Rouge or Mario and Peach is serious skill. No way I'm beating that anytime soon (or anytime at all, for that matter).

Sarky-Sparky In reply to RidleyWright [2009-12-18 04:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's how you do it? I wondered if it was like messing about with low opacity blue overlays. I don't think she got too dark. Of course I'm unfamiliar with the character but the blue is identifiable so you'll know it's made an impact on the tone of her. I think she looks great with it to be honest! It had a really nice effect.

That's fair enough! If you disagree with me about the shading, that's fine ^^ I suppose it's because I'm more used to digital paint and a heavier kind of soft cell, I'm not 'qualified' enough to critique this kind of art XD Yeah, the background doesn't really fit with it but background are nightmares to do so nobody is going to hold it against you XD

Ahh I see, the simplicity effect on the face? Hmmm, I know what you mean but I'm not sure... something is missing. If it's not shading, maybe it's highlights? Highlight the lips faintly, or the cheeks or the nose? I'm not sure. Either way her face is still drawn remarkably well so no worries there.

You're welcome! I hope I was at least a little bit helpful. I really did enjoy looking through your work. It's all brilliant and I'm watching you to see more.

The correct phrase is "you remind me a bit of myself" but close enough XD I thought the same thing when you commented on my page. I thought "oh my god, I KNOW how you feel!" and thought if you're anything like me maybe you'll appreciate a few critiques. It was shocking really to see someone with such talent have so little confidence.

I'm still experimenting with styles trying a lot of new things out, new colouring and drawing etc. But I tend to be very much in with digital painting. One thing I could never ever master was cell shading and soft cell and that's probably why your work impresses me so much. Plus your anatomy is better than mine XD It's quite funny you've identified my quick paints like New Heros, the sonic and the Mario ones XD But as I said, I'm still finding my feet. You seem to be one step ahead of me.
