I know, it's not really seizury but ignore that (cuz I'm still doing those! Why do I think religion is the cancer killing earth? I'll tell you why, it indoctrinates us (as I stated before) into hatred and even causes war, it even rips families apart, and why would it rip them apart? Because some faggot in the family had to get indoctrinated into being a Christian, Jew, Catholic, etc. Religion also prevents us from eating certain foods that might ACTUALLY be good for you (like bacon, yum!) so we don't get nutrients.
Why would it indoctrinate us into hatred? Because they teach that "violent" or "immortal" video games, films, books, music are wrong, thus, making us hate things, there's the indoctrination part. Religion can also make you genocidal and close-minded.
Why does religion cause war? Because they teach you about politics and some even promote joining the military, which also causes war.
Why does it rip families apart? Because someone or a few members of the family had to become religious or leave the religion, which can cause families to be at each others' throats.
Why does it prevent us from eating potentially healthy foods? Because all foods can be healthy when carefully moderated, sometimes we need fat, which comes from beef/pork, because being too skinny isn't healthy, and beef enzymes can be healthy for you!
So, there you go, why I think religion is the cancer killing poor Earth, enjoy.
TL;DR version: Want one? Shut up and read the entire thing.

If I may, while not particularly religious myself, I am very spiritual and come from a religious background and I would like to offer up a few differing perspectives in the spirit of civil discourse.
Not all religions and variants indoctrinate into hatred. The majority of Christian sects, Buddhism, sects of Hinduism and even the pacifist variant of Islam called Sufism preach from a position of peace and wisdom. And anti-video game/movie/music/books sentiment is not native to religious folk. Ask any given Millennial SJW and they'll likely tell you both that they're atheist and that they want 'sexist' or 'problematic' or 'overly violent' things banned. When Orson Scott Card came out as not particularly liking gay people, he got called everything under the sun and the SJW crowds wanted to burn Ender's Game by the truckload... until they found their next righteous indignation fix.
Religion doesn't cause war. At least not absolutely. The mundane reality is that religious figureheads are honestly less interested in the religion itself and more interested in politics and power. The pope has historically had a hand in politics dating back hundreds of years. Wars are caused by the more basic animal urges that have been dressed up and excused upon things like religion. It's territory and resources that cause wars more often than not. Which isn't to say that religious war doesn't exist... The Sunni and Shiite factions of Islam war because of a disagreement on what equates to trivial semantics. That is the height of lunacy. However, religion is not the root of all war or even the majority. The Crusades wasn't about 'liberating the holy land' for those pulling the strings. It was about settling petty grudges and dressing it up in religious trappings.
Religion doesn't rip families apart any more than guns float into the air and spontaneously kill people. People rip families apart when they can't settle their differences civilly. And reasons other than religion can be matters for friction among families. I have a friend who is ostracized by his in-laws because he's not descended from a particular bloodline. I have met atheists who find homosexuality disgusting and die-hard Christians who have more tolerance for homosexuality than a militant atheist has for anyone who believes in a higher power. I confess this is likely due to my choosiness with whom I associate, but that's not a trait I'm ashamed of, since the people you associate with say something about you.
The food thing all depends on orthodoxy and requires a contextual understanding of history and old world hygiene. It's sadly one of those things that was mentioned more as a health advisory where disease was concerned and like so many things in holy texts, became blown out of proportion. The chapter from the Bible with the passage regarding homosexuals was a mention and quote of public health, but because it was in the bible, hardliner Christians used it as shielding to cover their discomfort of homosexuality and Atheists used it as 'proof that all Christianity is entirely homophobic'. Frankly, I wish both sides would actually read the bloody thing and get some context so they can focus on more constructive things along their personal inclinations.
The Too Long, Didn't Read version is this: Tis not religion killing the planet and people, tis greed instead, something both sides can agree is not a good trait.

And now, a few words from Jesus.
"Love thy enemy, and pray for those who persecute you."
"If a man smite thee, turn the other cheek."
"Do not judge, so that you may not be judged."
"Let the one among you who is without sin throw the first stone."
"Treat others the way you would like to be treated, for this is the law of the prophets."
"The greatest commandment is this; to love God, and love thy neighbor as thyself."
...
Clearly, Christianity is not meant to be a religion of hate, as you seem to think. I do agree, however, that an unfortunately vast percentage of Christians are complete idiots.
(I can't speak for the other major religions, however)

I'm not saying that Christianity hasn't got a doctrine incorporating peace, tolerance, love, etc., but there's been terrible things done in the name of essentially every religion, and Christianity is certainly no exception (*tiny cough* Crusades)... its honestly how people interpret it that matters in the end. You can have a religion that wholeheartedly supports peace and there will always be people who interpret it in such a twisted way that it's used as a rationale for terrible things.Β

IJDragonfly In reply to Cypselurus [2015-08-07 17:05:41 +0000 UTC]
Precisely my point. The religion itself is not evil and can even be healthy for some; however, people will always find a way to twist and mutilate its doctrines to justify their atrocities. In the end, it all comes down to the individual.

Cypselurus In reply to IJDragonfly [2015-08-28 12:15:17 +0000 UTC]
Definitely. That's honestly true for so many different things, not just religion, though it certainly seems quite ferocious during certain religious conflicts.Β
