Description This winter, we are untethered--

We float weightless on an
Endless expanse, ocean liners
Drifting unmoored into the
Blindfolding dark.

We whisper in chandelier lights;
We spill diaphanous colours into
The void, our trails lapped up by
The inky blue, buoyed up by simple
Emptiness.

Our hulls sway to the cold rhythm
Of the water's embrace, guided on
By sparse stars above, hanging
From unreachable heights
(Ripened and poised to fall...)

From afar, we are bright islands
Gliding soundless into the distance.
One might wonder what could that pack
Of ghostly creatures be, traveling
Down an abandoned road like lost
Camels through ancient deserts.
The wells are stone-dry and the
Oasis cities house none but shadows
(White walls, bleached paths).
One might wonder what more are
We than mirages, slowly fading out
Into dim husks, cursed to sail forevermore.

But we smile and plow on headfirst,
Eyes closed in faith. The north
Wind reaches out and traces our
Ruddy cheeks, points to the horizon
And murmurs, "You're almost there,"
So into the night we wander,
Tasting the scent of vanilla dawn.
