I've noticed that too. If I flip my images, mistakes I haven't seen suddenly show up.

that's so cool that you flipped it to reveal errors... I discovered that technique and use it in each and every picture that I draw. I'm not sure how it worked but it does. I thought I was the only one who knew this

I'm glad to see that you flip the image to correct errors. I do that with my digital art, and to an extent with my traditional media, but it's always a bummer after I finish a piece of traditional art, scan it in, flip it and then see all the mistakes.

Wow, Thank you for this tutorial! Very helpful. I really admire your technique! I'm a little confused on the flipping image part though. I see what you're getting at, but can you explain to me how it reveals mistakes? Or like, an example of one?

hollarity In reply to kevinXchou [2011-01-16 07:52:37 +0000 UTC]

By flipping the image mistakes tend to become more apparent to the artist because they're seeing the image in a new way they haven't become used to. Same principle as to way it's usually easier to spot mistakes in someone else's image than in your own- you've become used to yours, errors and all, while their's is fresh for the scrutiny. Couple that with the fact that it's easier to spot asymmetry in anatomy when seeing the mirrored image @u@

That's just my theory though xD

ya that is a really good idea, i usually don't look at my work for a few days after i finish something, then i come back and the mistakes are a lot easier to spot. but this saves a lot of time, thanks

kevinXchou In reply to hollarity [2011-01-16 15:08:35 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I see. I mean, when I draw, I always saw something very different when flipping it, but I didn't really understand why. Thank you!

how many layers did you use?

smart move on flipping the image. I never thought about doing that. I should pick up that trick again, may do me some real good. Thanks for the reminder. ^_^

I like the idea of flipping the image to reveal errors. I know that after staring at a drawing too long it can be hard to see how it really looks. Same with writing. Good tactic!

I don't have a tablet or any sort of painter program, but when I finish sketching stuff I always hold it up to a mirror to see errors better! It's kinda funny to see that I'm not the only one who does that kinda thing

When you flip the image, what errors do you look for? Anatomy, lighting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Risachantag In reply to graceofbass [2011-01-16 01:35:02 +0000 UTC]

Anatomy and perspective, mostly. In this case, I had to fix Katara's blocking arm and reangle Zuko's fist. It can be interesting seeing your composition flipped too; every so often the picture will look better flipped.

dcolb121 [2011-01-15 15:06:50 +0000 UTC]

I too flip the image to check for "problems".

I don't do it so much lately (since I've improved) but it's still a simple and quick trick to check things...

VerminFu [2011-01-15 15:04:43 +0000 UTC]

You do have a very different starting style, most people I know (myself included) make a clear sketch which is like rough lineart, whereas you can start with just basic shapes and still make it really detailed at the end.

How many layers does it usually take you? And rough time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Risachantag In reply to VerminFu [2011-01-16 01:37:38 +0000 UTC]

I also do a detailed drawing before starting sometimes, it depends on how I feel at the time. I think I had around 20 layers, and it took 4 hours.

CopperHearte [2011-01-15 14:46:23 +0000 UTC]
