Description
"I'll just paint a simple background" she says. Four hours later...Haha, anyway, I hope you've enjoyed this series! If you haven't been following along, I do recommend you have a look at tutorial 2 & 4 for colour mixing info, as I didn't want to go over the same material again for this background tutorial.

All and all great tutorial! Except I have to nip one thing in the bud, you had a better piece before you hit it with hard light, which weakened the value separation of BG and FG. Which is a shame really because it makes it look like a very amateur mistake. Seems like you are your own worst enemy on when to stop on something!
Looking at it, I can see why. You never really decided on different strengths for your lights. Once you made the yellow background as bright as the turquoise crystals it just clashes right around the focal point of the face. When all 3 lights are fairly equal brightness it doesn't work. For anyone reading, a tip remember to pick which light is brightest and which is weakest! It gets much easier to read these forms in the shadows when the cool blue light of the crystals by her left leg we can easily see the forms, or the sun hitting the far right of the image because there isn't any fighting of different lights.

This is extremely useful for me, someone who's just starting to draw! Even though I don't have Photoshop (which I assume is the program you're using?), this is very helpful and I will definitely use this as reference for coloring in the future!
