Description With this piece, I wanted a real sense of scale. The theme is all about flight and trusting yourself. I wanted it to feel like a dream; the only way to find out if you can fly or not is to jump.

I'm feeling an amazing amount of vertigo just looking at this!

I just want to say one thing, if I may: the largest bird on the right doesn't quite look big enough when you I compare it to the size of the other birds (they look very fuzzy like they're far away, so it makes them look like they should be quite big). But I understand that it's really hard to judge size when they're flying over an open chasm of undetermined size.
That's my opinion anyway.

Beautiful picture!

and i fav just only becouse i'm afraid about him. I can not explain this, but if the art make emotions in viewers hearts it means it's a good work.
I do not know what will happen, but i hope it won't be anything bad. He must be so hopeful and really want to fly. I wish him success!

really nice art, i like the view and colours. c:
keep it up!

Holy cow, your perspective is amazing: it almost seems like the veiwer is going to tumble off the edge of the cliff! I've tried to do something simalar to this perspective-wise before, but I have alway ended up with something that appeared flat, or too-square (right angles and such) How did you get this to work so well and keep the natural look of the peice?

Risachantag In reply to Saphiire [2009-09-29 02:08:14 +0000 UTC]

It may be because I used a slight fish-eye-lens effect (notice how the horizon and the edge of the gorge appear curved rather than straight?). It's something I learned through photography. Using a wide angle shot can give you a great sense of scale in your pictures.

Oh, I see. I didn't think of applying phtographic effects into a picture (which seems fairly self-evident that such would be a good idea, now that I think about it...)

Beautiful! I saw something like this in a movie once...
Though they were on those flying dinosaurs. Really old movie, like from the 90s. I don't remember much of it at all.

I've been periodically checking in on your artwork for years, and you've improved so much. The level of detail here is incredible, especially in the landscape - you've evolved as an artist and that continued evolution is more evident with every piece you upload. I wish I could offer you some critique here, but honestly I've never really been great at that sort of thing.

I'm curious - how big was the original canvas, in pixels? And I know it's a lot to ask, but I've been trying to teach myself digital landscape painting and it's-- not going so well, even with tutorials. D: Do you perchance have the the .psd file of this still hanging around? It would help me a lot to be able to look at what goes where and the layering process you used.

However, art theft is a huge issue around the internet and this is a really big and somewhat ridiculous thing to ask, I know, so if you'd rather not, then I understand completely and it's perfectly fine. XD;

This one was about 3000x4000 pixels. Sorry, but I don't give out copies of the original files. I have a few detail shots of other digital paintings in my scraps though, if you're curious about the brushstrokes/textures. ...and if you'd like, I could do the same for this picture. [link] [link]

Seeing detail shots of this piece would be fantastic, thank you so much.

And it's totally okay - I can understand why you wouldn't want to. I probably wouldn't either. Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it.

Awesome outfit on that character, and I really do feel that they could turn into one of the birds just as they throw themselves into the sky. Their gender, to me, looks uncertain enough for it to be anyone. The landscape is awesome too, but mostly what struck me about this at first was the beautiful sense of space and the bright oranges. Fantastic.

Whoa...that's awesome!!! I love the color palette you chose for this, the oranges and the blacks of the birds and boy really pop against the blues and greens of the backdrop. It really drew my eye you know? And the sense of depth you gave to the canyon was simply phenomenal. I don't know exactly what technique you used to do the trees along the cliff side, but they look as if I could just reach down and touch them. It's amazing, really. This is a defniate add to the favorites list, hands down.
