Description In the starting gate, King kept nervously shifting his weight from hoof to hoof, and Evan could feel how tense the big grey was. He crouched low over the stallion’s neck, whispering quietly to the horse -- not really saying anything in particular, just trying to calm King down. It felt like time had stopped; the roar of the audience had become nothing but background noise and all Evan could hear properly was his own voice and King chomping at the bit.
The bell rang.
The gates flung open.
King leapt forward, legs pumping like pistons.
We’re in a good position, Evan thought. Inside rail.
The other horses were still fairly even, but starting to draw ahead of King. Not yet, Evan told himself.
King was fighting the bit, angry at being held back as the others began to pull ahead. Sweat shone on his silvery coat, working into a lather as he galloped.
In the stands, Kate was watching nervously, hands clenched in her lap. She and Evan had discussed this tactic, but now that it was in practice, she wasn’t sure how well it would work. The general idea was that Evan would hold King back until the last half-mile, and then give him his head. This would take advantage of the stallion’s sprinting ability. Now, though, she worried as the other horses drew further and further ahead.
Evan watched another horse draw ahead of him, the golden-bay mare King had been trying to impress during the post parade. He recognized her now; SWS The Titan’s Curse. She was a known champion, a six-year-old with a history of wins. Evan’s eyes flicked back to the track ahead.
Half a mile left.
He gave King his head.
