Description Weekly bird speedpainting

I've seen all of the Star Wars movies in the last few weeks (because my boyfriend wanted to watch them all with me), including the newest one. And then I found out about an endangered parrot called 'imperial amazon'... and started to draw immediately xD

Imperial amazon (Amazona imperialis)

Lovely pic! The dusky colors of the Imperial Amazon are beautiful to behold.

yes, if casting next SW film with all birds, this guy'd totally have be a Sith Lord
so someone tell JJ Abrams

Seconding the suggestion to paint the St Vincent's Amazon, they are gorgeous birds.

*hums the Imperial March*
And then his name would be Darth Mischievous.

Thanks! And, OK, I will put the St. Vincent's Amazon on the list but I'll draw that one later (first some non-psittacines).

Oh wow, that's a rad looking bird! So different from the more standard green amazons I'm used to, those purplish and rusty colours on this one are incredible. I like how you painted the eye, and all those little scratches on their beak. Lovely!

Indeed, their plumage is a bit like kea: dull and a bit boring at first sight, but then you start to see the subtle colors in their plumage. What you say, the purple and rusty colors on the head, neck and chest. And the bright orange eye is also very notable. Thanks!

Oh by the way, have you ever heard of the St Vincents Amazon? It came up when I looked for imperials - they have some very interesting colour combinations going on as well! www.nejohnston.org/birds/2013/… s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/7…  s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/2…

Oh nice! Hadn't heard of them but they look very colorful indeed, but in a very messy and blurry way, almost dirty (brown). Interesting plumage indeed xD There's also quite some variation between the three parrots in the links you sent me, although there is a clear pattern.

Yeah, it's strange how such bright colours can come together with others and somehow give an overall impression of brown. I'd imagine there is bound to be a lot of subtle individual variation when you have a colour pattern as complex as this!

Exactly! Keas are amazing with their fiery underwings Though I have to say on some picture these Imperial amazons look very colourful (mostly) purple indeed, though that may just have to do with the pictures themselves too. So a flashy bird nonetheless, under good lighting!

Indeed, but I wonder if the saturation of those pictures where they are clearly purple are maybe a bit boosted?

I do think so, the plants etc in the background of those pictures tend to be a little more colourful than normally too. It could also be a combination of both lighting and photo post processing.

ooo wow! This one has some awesome colors and I love how subtle they are too...and the beak also looks amazing, I love how you can see the little ridges and such from where it's been used over a lifetime...beautiful and impressive!

Aw thanks! At first sight I found them a bit dull and 'greasy', but then I started to appreciate the very subtle colors too. The feathers on their chest can be purplish blue, apparently.

Ah yes, parrots have very clear ridges on the beak, and some people use them to recognize different individuals. (Although it may not be a valid method over a long period?)
