Description
1/8/09 - Tortilla Flat, AZTortilla Flat started out as a stage stop in 1904. With a population of 6, it is presumed to be Arizona's smallest official "community" having a U.S. Post Office and voter's precinct. The town is an authentic remnant of an old west town.
Tortilla Flat was originally a camping ground for the prospectors who searched for gold in the Superstition Mountains in the mid to late 1800s. Later it became a freight camp for the construction of Theodore Roosevelt Dam.
In 1942 a flood in badly damaged the town. The store and restaurant were rebuilt after a fire consumed the buildings in 1987. Several hiking trails into the Superstition Mountains begin near Tortilla Flat.
