Description
[Erik] drew endlessly, obsessively, on any surface that was available. If I did not keep him continually supplied with paper, I would find his designs on the flyleaf of my father's books, on the reverse side of his plans--even on the wallpaper up the side of the stairs. Madeleine, Kay's Phantom, page 20My entry for 's Erik at Work contest. Young Erik, accompanied by his dog Sasha, drawing on the wall.
I initially voted against that theme; I've done two paintings and a photo-manip of Erik 'composing' and I didn't want to do another one. Then this idea came to me, and I was very grateful.
The other title I had considered for this painting was 'Castle on a Cloud'... I've been listening to Les Mis too much...
*Would have been uploaded yesterday if not for my computer troubles.

Great job! But I did kind of think the drawings would be a bit better quality, but he is young after all, Sashas so cute!

before i say anything else...if my cousins did what he is doing in this picture...I would probably snap...and i am very nice (i use to clean the writing off the wall) but if they did that you will find me somewhere either screaming or doing something like hitting my head on the wall.
anyhow i like it how the drawings look childish but yet somehow advance for a certain age

This is such a neat, creative entry for the contest. You didn't go for the classic phantom that we see in the movie and play. You went deeper, using the books. I hereby dub you true fan! Anyways, everything is really well done in this picture. You have my vote for the contest.

I dunno... His mother said that he carved a picture of a castle into their dinner table with a pair of embroidery scissors, why not on the wall as well?

Lol, strangely enough, that's a lot like me XDD but.... If I'm bored at school, the only thing keeping me from drawing in my textbooks is the fact that I'd have to pay $50 to replace them, and my mother's wrath keeps me from drawing on the walls XDD Hence my having 5 or 6 sketchbooks lying around my room.

I always drew on the margins of all my tests and homework papers. It drove the teachers crazy.

Lol, I doodles all over my last Art History exame XDD Luckily Mrs. Gulino liked it. What really killed me was those teachers who wouldn't accept papers if the edges were torn, or there were doodles in the margins. OMG MR. PINE! *stab* I think I killed atleast one whole tree trying to make my work acceptable.

Your welcome! I have a question, can you give me some advice on how you do your acrylic paints? I just need some pointers so I can get started on this one idea I have.

I'd be happy to give you some advice. What in particular did you want to know?

How do you blend colors? How do you make things look more realistic? Um, how do you make things look more dimensional and less flat. How do you add texture?
I know I have a lot of questions! You don't have to answer all of them--just the ones you think you have answers to.

RJDaae In reply to phantomdeviant [2007-07-07 19:41:48 +0000 UTC]
I'll try...
The key to getting things to look more dimensional is the shadows. If you can get them right, the rest usually falls into place.
As for 'blending', I'm not sure, do you mean mixing the colours? Like, when you mix blue and yellow it makes green? Acrylics mix colours very well.
I'm the wrong person to ask about texture, though... I still haven't gotten a decent grasp of it myself.
Overall, acrylics are (in my opinion) pretty easy to use. You can even mix them with water, in case you want to do a watercolour-ish painting. The one problem with them (as far as I'm concerned) is that they dry very quickly. To cope with that, I paint with a lot of water on the brush.
It's funny to say this, but what probably helped me with painting a lot was learning to ' paint ' on the computer. I learned a lot about shading that way.
I hope this is helpful

Yes, it's very helpful. I've done one acrylic before and it was a pop art piece of Audrey Hepburn and didn't come out well at all. I want to start using acrylics frequently since oil paints require so much work and cleaning up. Thanks again for the advice!
