Description
Caledonian Railway No. 938 was a large 4-6-0 passenger engine built by Hawthorn-Leslie in 1915. It was originally a Highland Railway engine, No. 70 "River Ness." The Highland sold it after a fierce debate erupted among the Highland management as to whether the big engine was too big and hard on the track. When it was sold to the Caledonian, River Ness lost its name and was painted blue. No. 938 was well-liked by the Caledonian, who preferred it over any "native" 4-6-0. It was retired in 1939 and scrapped, but a large model of it is on display at the National Railway Museum.Related content
