This model of the alien mothership in Steven Spielberg's 1977 science-fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind was designed by Ralph McQuarrie and built by Greg Jein under Douglas Turnbull's supervision. One of the modelmakers, Denis Muren, added an R2-D2 figurine as a reference to the year's other science-fiction blockbuster film, George Lucas's Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The ethereal lighting of the alien mothership helped Vilmos Zsigmond win the cinematography Oscar, and the model is now on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. I've seen this in person, and it is quite a sight to behold. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind should be released on 4K Blu-Ray for its 40th anniversary.
