Description
The Consolidated XPY-1 was the prototype for the U.S. Navy's P2Y maritime patrol flying boat, which served throughout the 1930s but was replaced by the more common and famous PBY Catalina just before America joined World War II. It was also used by Argentina and Colombia, and was evaluated by Japan as the Consolidated HXC, which informed the development of Imperial Japanese Navy flying boats. This 1/20 scale wooden model of the XPY-1 was built in 1929 for wind tunnel tests, and shows the twin tails and rather tall, spindly profile of the plane. The model is now displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.Related content

So far I've yet to see any surviving planes or accurate models of how one looked in service -- until I saw this wind tunnel test model, I wasn't familiar with this plane at all.

Thanks! This was the first time I'd heard of this plane.
