Description The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) collection in the World War II exhibit of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum (Ottawa) includes a Heinkel He 162A-1 Volksjäger jet fighter, which was designed in only three months near the end of the war and built mostly of wood by a desperate and shorthanded Germany.  The museum's He 162 was captured new and in good condition (with apparently no combat record) by Allied troops when Germany surrendered in May 1945 and was displayed at Hyde Park in London before transfer to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1946.  The RCAF donated it to the Canadian War Museum in 1964, and the Canadian War Museum donated it to the aviation museum in 1967.
