Description
Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus (Never tickle a sleeping dragon).- Motto of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series
As of 2015, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) operates two classes of attack submarines: the new Soryu-class ships, which have an X-shaped tail, and the preceding Oyashio-class ships, which have a vertical tail and two extra fins on the conning tower. Two submarines, one of each class, were docked at Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture. The Soryu-class ships are named for dragons, and the Oyashio-class ships for ocean currents and tides. Both classes of submarine are armed with torpedoes and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and are powered by diesel engines capable of propelling the ships to 20 knots. They are not usually seen, as they spend most of their time patrolling the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan, and working with Japan's allies such as America and Australia on naval exercises.
