Description One of the Royal Air Force's most versatile jet fighters in the Cold War was a foreign import, the American-designed McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, a supersonic fighter-bomber that served from 1969 to 1992.  An early RAF Phantom, FGR.2 (F-4M) fighter XV424, was delivered to the No. 6 Squadron (the first RAF Phantom squadron) in 1969, but wrote its page in aviation history ten years later when it was assigned to No. 56 Squadron.  In 1979, for the 60th anniversary of Alcock and Brown's 1919 nonstop transatlantic flight aboard a Vickers Vimy, XV424 flew from Canada to Britain with Tony Alcock piloting and Norman Browne navigating, after which it returned to regular interception duty.  After No. 56 Squadron left RAF Wattisham in 1992 and converted to the new Panavia Tornado F.3, XV424 was transferred to the RAF Hendon museum in London.
