Launched in the 1960s, Speed Racer was one of the first anime/manga series to become popular in the West. In it, Go Mifune drives the Mach 5, a 5000-horsepower race car built by his father Daisuke Mifune. In 2000, a sports car based on the Mach 5 was proposed, and a few examples were built with a Chevrolet Corvette chassis and a 345-horsepower engine. The Petersen Automotive Museum has one of these Mach 5 cars right next to the Batmobile.
