I believe the Mach 5's ancestor was Zora Duntov's test mule, a 1954 Corvette, the EX-87.
Believe it or not, the color scheme, headrest/fin combo are virtually the same. The Corvette now resides in a private collection.

This car is really outstanding. I can't find any part which could lack originality. The lamps, the cushion, wheelarches are so unique! Could be hotwheels design.

You're right the design is unique. I wonder though if the designers were perhaps inspired to some degree by the Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage for the raised wheelarch design: [link]
