Description
O.K. most artist will do exploratory designs before creating a final piece. these exploratory designs can be character sketches, entire enviorments, or anything that is going to help do the finished piece. in this case i did this painting to figure out the look and feel of Holmes. i had done some additional character sketches that i liked. but this piece is what i would refer to a rough first pass at the Sherlock Holmes piece i posted a while ago (Hound of the Baskervilles). i would abandon this direction because Holmes seems static and uninteresting. even though it seems as if that something dramatic had just happend. so remember 1.it's important to not fall in love with the first thing you do. you are awlays capable of something more. 2. you don't always get it right at first and everyone has some difficulty in capturing exactly what they want. so that being said i will be posting my roughs and my failed pieces. just to show a before and after with some of my pieces.Related content

I love how you drew Holmes' face. He's an ugly man drawn in an attractive style. Jealous I didn't create this style.

Hey, I was wondering if I could reblog this in my sherlock blog [link] It's a pretty new blog so it doesn't have much on it. I would give full credit of course!

He doesn't realize what is so wrong with what he's doing because in his mind, it's essential to sit on the corpse.

Again, your style is so original and really stands out. It makes everything look so much lively on paper, if you get what I mean.

I deduct that he's dead... Holmes is epicness on its own level.

Your roughs are better than my finished pieces. I really like this, all though I do see what you mean about Holmes being static in this one. I do still quite like it and overall the art is astoundingly good, whether or not you like the pose.

Wow, great work. I love the style, I'm so glad you posted it even if you call it a rough pass. The lines are fantastic and the colors you chose work extremely well.

Thanks for the advice, too. Somewhere in the back of my head I know all this, but it's good to have it shoved in my face every once in a while.
Good luck with future projects!

Thisn is really cool, and that is some good advice you posted about always being able to do better.
On a side-note; when I saw Holmes' pipe I though "a snarflat! 8D" xD random Disney moment there.

such a sense of lighting here, even with a stark white negative space, i cn already see the missing environment and lighting in my mind. can't wait to see how this develops man.
