How about Thunder Wall? It's a thunderstorm, and it really does look like a wall of lightning approaching the city.

Short Answer: Yes.

Long answer:

It got a tweak in lightroom, then went to photoshop and got a levels layer added. That's about it.

Oh, there was a bit of healing to try get rid of the colour noise that appears when a digital has it's shutter open for the best part of half an hour, too, but again, nothing that i'd call manipped. I might put the unchanged original up in my scraps, if you'd like.

All the lightning bolts did happen, just not all at once. The shutter was open for almost half an hour- 1640-odd seconds, if devArt remembers better than i do. The sensor only records when light hits it, and the sky's mostly too dark to show up- It was proper night time by this stage, and I still had to have the aperture at f/22 to avoid blowing out the lights in the township below while having the shutter open that long.

Yeah. A single exposure of just under 30 minutes. 1642 seconds, apparently.

Amazing! Do you use time lapse to capture stuff like this I would like to try and get some of the electrical storms here in texas in shots like this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rmford In reply to soulstrifer [2010-10-03 19:13:38 +0000 UTC]

Not so much time lapse, which is a series of (short) exposures taken over a longer period of time, but a single, long exposure. I think this one had the shutter open for about half an hour.

soulstrifer In reply to rmford [2010-10-04 00:53:21 +0000 UTC]

Wow that is so cool. Definantly have to try this out XP... need a tripod first << and have to figure out how to keep the shutter open on my D3000 nikon XD Thanks for the information.

It'll usually be called bulb, or b... often found all the way up the slow end of the M setting on your mode dial.

No problems.

If you're gonna do reeeeally long exposure stuff like this, a timer-shutter button is well worth the investment.

Ebay rocks for that sorta thing.

1642/1 second

Which is 1642 seconds divided by 60 seconds in a minute is about 25 minutes, i think. can't really remember, but if you want, you can work it out

how many seconds was the exposure?

I imagine it must have been at least a few minutes...

Good lord, that is awesome! I was wondering how you did it, then I saw your exposure time. That is one hell of a storm that rolled through. Do you mind if I ask where this was taken?

It was taken from hummock hill, which is an old bunker/lookout thing in the town of whyalla, south australia.

If you would still like a few name suggestions, how about:

10,000 Strikes.

High Voltage.

Power Trip.

The Gathering.

Overload.

I have the same name issues with my shots too lol.

Great work my friend

Take care

"Fingers of God" reminds me of God reaching down through the clouds. Lightning is associated with power, power is associated with God. I think it fits but just giving my two cents.

Wicked! This hasn't been manipulated in any way, shape or form? It's so awesome! The lighting bolts look like electric trees. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rmford In reply to Rakshiv-Fire-Runner [2009-10-29 18:37:44 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say manipulated, but it has had a bit of exposure work done... Simply because i'm not good enough to control how the picture's gonna come out of the camera with photos like this.

Rakshiv-Fire-Runner In reply to rmford [2009-10-29 20:05:38 +0000 UTC]

I was implying the amount of lightning bolts, like if they were all manipulated together or not, separate photos. But I know next to nothing about photography so I have no idea how exposure works or any of that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rmford In reply to Rakshiv-Fire-Runner [2009-10-29 20:50:38 +0000 UTC]

In a nutshell, exposure is how bright or dark the photo is. An overexposed photo is one that is all washed out and too white, while an underexposed photo is one that's too dark.
