Description
A colony ship I've been working on in my spare time. Pics are of it in various stages of completion. I'm almost done modelling, and am starting to texture. Unfortunately, I've never done any UV mapping before, so it's a slow process. Feel free to download or whatever, just don't take credit or anything. Comments and criticism appreciated. I really like this design! You wouldn't mind if I used this as the base model for a colony ship in a fanfic I'm working on, would you? Also what are its dimentions length-wise?

You know, I really have to say that this style of starship, when they look more like the International Space Station than the Enterprise, is my favorite, because it portrays what I truly believe real-life future starships will really resemble!
I mean, think about it: with the difficulties of modern space travel and technology, it would be a lot easier and more affordable to build a starship in pieces like the ISS rather than in bulk all at once like the Enterprise. The whole thing with artificial gravity makes more sense with the spinning-ring-trick like on the starship you made here rather than Star Trek-esque "gravity generators." And don't even get me started on breaking lightspeed!
Sure, starship design and technology might be more like in Star Trek within the next few millenium, but the point is that this makes much more sense for the technology expected during our own lifetimes!
Just a thought: Do you think the International Space Station could be rebuilt into a starship of some sort? Just reorganize the sections into a line, add a few engines and a couple shuttles and GO! It would be better than dropping it down to Earth in the next twenty years...
Okay, enough Jabberjaw...this computer model looks pretty good so far. Keep up the good work and you could have something sweet in your portfolio!

Thanks for the positive feedback! I haven't done much more work on it since then though haha, been too busy. I don't really think that the ISS could be made into a form of transport at all...the technical difficulties would be immense. Structurally, if you stuck an engine on it and started accelerating, the whole thing would probably just fall apart, even if organized into a line. There's also the matter of fuel storage, food storage, and radiation shielding for the crew. Personally, I'd HOPE that we wouldn't have a problem with dumping the ISS in 20 years because we've got bigger and better ones already up, or on the way...but looking at how the space program's been going I'm not too optimistic

Thanks! I'm just finalizing the modelling and starting the texturing, but as I said, I've never UV mapped before, so it's quite a learning experience

Yeah, I made those in the beginning, when I still thought I would be making a low-poly model . It'll be really easy to change though. Thanks for the comment!

Great concept! It's always a pleasure to see a more 'realistic' spacecraft design. The biggest flaw I can see with the mesh is the segmentation of the rings supporting the spherical structures. They really need to have more segments in the circle.
