Description
Here are some details of the drive gears I made for the all wood Shay Locomotive display. The silver axles and drive shafts are shower curtain rods and the ball bearings are replacement parts for roll up garage doors. The pink-ish color is polyester resin body filler Bondo because it's very durable and easy to shape. The lower left shows how I made the compound angle gears to mesh with the compound angle geared wheels. This was tricky because even though it wasn't actually an operating train pulling a load, everything had to animate & turn and the gears mesh so that it wouldn't bind up.
