Description

This is my Master Study participation in the 'Master Study to Original - January Challenge' of MasterStudiesAndMore , co-hosted by Inspiring-Creation and ThatArtGrind ".

The theme of January is Animals, and I have seen recently the "The Legend of Tarzan" (2016) a very nice movie, big on Gorillas. So I went hunting for pics and came across this great painting of  Daryl Mandryk

Return of Tarzan (used with permission).

There are plenty of things to be learned from it, I liked particularly of the animal expression on both ape and man. The focus and movement on it is also very interesting to study and finally the jungle colors. The plan is to practice painting jungle and gorillas and then move on to my original.

This time I used thick paper primed with white paint. Compared to hardboard it seems to absorb more paint, so for example, I felt it was harder to do fine line-work as my lines kept turning either too thick or too light (from diluting the paint for it to become more fluid). If you're wondering I'm up-cycling an old picture frame: first the hardboard back and now the front paper sheet.

It's finished, so now it's Original time for this Challenge.

Update1: some more fur and leaves

Update2 Final: more fur, leaves, rasta, hand and knife. Fixed pic, painting might be just a bit more saturated.

Woah!!! this is looking good. The colors are really popping here!!! I like the fur and the way you did Tarzan's skin, really good!!
That gorilla mouth and that bit of spit is still really amazing

Thanks! With these acrylics there is a lot of transparency between layers of paint and I was wondering if you tried to play with opacity on your (digital) color studies? I guess you might in using the monochrome to color method... But using it to get colors on top of colors should also be interesting.

You know that is very interesting because a lot of digital artists, at least the ones that I have seen on YouTube, tend to use a brush with an opacity. I am told it helps with how the light works and how colors properly show through and helps with better mixing...I have no idea how to use this method   I have a lot to learn.

Hi Sekemolados! Thanks, I'm glad you liked the first version. I'm getting a bit more comfortable with colors and with acrylics. But it's definitely not easy and not fast for me. I still haven't tried to do a full color painting on digital, only a couple monochrome ones, so I'm quite curious to see what will happen.

I think I made Tarzan look forward instead of into the gorilla, so as if they are both attacking a third character ; ).

Thanks! Frazetta is also on my list, and he was a traditional media painter. Nice art from S.Bainchi. My first drawings as a teenager were Batman (on a typical night shot: top of building looking down at the city) and Elektra with her swords. I remember that women were much harder to draw because of the muscles, as you were telling the other day : )

I found a lot of unity on the colors, for example the brown on top of the ape head that continues to Tarzan's hair, or the green on the ape chest that reflects into the front of Tarzan's knee.

That first pic was a bit strange, still testing the scanner settings. Now its quite close to what it looks like, I just had to stretch the levels with gimp.

The photography is very good on the movie, very inspirational.

I agree with Ana, the way you did the mouth of the gorilla is fantastic.
(Edit) the lighting is also pretty cool and the way you have captured it that highlights the gorilla's fur.

It is looking really good so far and I really like the lighting. The fact that you are attempting to do a concept art study traditionally is really cool. It would have been tricky trying to do it digitally. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
