1. When did you create your first bondage image and what was it?

My first image was probably a manip. I used to use photoshop, take nudes and dress them up in superheroine costumes. I think I started doing this almost 13 years ago. It wasn’t that good, but I got a lot better at it over the years. I looked into Poser back then but everything seemed so plastic about it. The skins overly shiney and they looked terrible. Plus it had a daunting learning curve. Cut to three years ago and I tried again with Daz3d and I had some test images up quick and fast and soon some bondage images. My main problem with some of my earlier images is that I wanted to make sure that I had a variety of body shapes, and the first few characters looked too youthful.

2. How did you get your start creating superheroine peril scenarios?

In terms of story telling and such back when I was in #SHIP and #SHID on IRC. I had some very specific tastes and, this being the mid 90’s with the internet just coming up, there were some new websites that gave me certain ideas.

3. When did you first develop an interest in the genre?

OOf, I get this question a lot and I usually blame it on one person in particular. Poor Yvonne Craig, who probably was tired of hearing about how many people she ushered into the awkward phases of sexuality and fetishes. It was always a thrill to see her tied up or captured. And, of course, in comics at this time the costumes were more of a leotard and tights type of look. Cut to the 80s and you have Arielle from Thundarr, Scarlett from GI Joe, Chetarra and Teela and probably others I’m forgetting and you have the formation of a fairly specific fetish.

Of course there was Robin too, getting tied up and helpless. So that's how I ended up with characters like Raijin, Bolt and Nightshock.

4. How many superheroines are there in your Empire City Heroines Universe? Can you give us their names and a one sentence description of them?
Too many to name! 'Cause I keep coming up with new ones every other day. But let's take my picture called Universe of Possibilities and go from there.

From left to right -

Sona -
Sonic scream empowered clothing line designer, more of a casual heroine then doing it for any serious purpose, considered a B-Lister but her public personae often gets her lumped in with A-listers.

Sparrow -
Starling's sister, able to steal kinetic energy, not taking that seriously by the A-list superheroines. She and her sister are considered useful by the villains.

Silence -
She’s totally not like Bruce Wayne and Batman. For one, she’s Asian, and two, she’s female. Also she’s not been introduced!

Ember -
Flame spewing hottie, considered to be one of the most voluptous and beautiful heroines, is really quite modest and shy. A-List was on the premiere team until Psi -- nevermind

Frost -
Ice and cold are her forte, thin, smart and loyal to Silence until Psi --- did her thing.

Allure -
Can use her voice to plant suggestions and issue COMMANDS. She likes to be a heroine because of the attention, she hopes to use her exploits and her best pal’s Aura to get more endorsement and publicity, so far its working, if not for the peril she finds herself in.

Autumn -
Is she a nature goddess or just a loon? It's hard to tell, but she is often seen on campus berating others for their crimes against nature. Control over nature.

Starling -
Poor victimized Starling, tricked by Irina, super strength in her tiny frame. Like her sister though, not taking it too seriously.

Psi -
It's in the name, crazy powerful, girl next door with body image issues. She did something that she will have to fess up to soon.

Violet - Ultraviolet (Invisilass?)
Is she really going to go to school at ECU transferring away from her protective parents?!

Starfall -
The power in her slender body may be driving her to be more and more detached from humanity. The first of all metas, even Liberty’s great great great great great grandmother remembers her.

Liberty -
Cheerful, cheerleadering, generational patriotic heroine! She may or may not know she’s a fictional character, but she loves it nonetheless! Strong, smart, trained, don’t let her slight size and peppy demeanor fool you!

Riptide -
Power of water and oceans? Yes! Buxom and beautiful! Yes? Not that interested in being a heroine, also yes!

Lightning -
A protege of a deceased hero, she, Starling and Spirit have formed a core group for the university which actually proved to be quite formidable.

Spirit -
The haunted girlfriend of Lightning, she communes with the dead and has empathic healing power, which requires her to take the wound of the person she is healing on to herself.

Gossamer -
Eager speedster ready to prove herself, nerdy and shy by day, she is more at ease at night.

Aura
Light manipulation and greed in a beautiful blonde. She is a heroine because it's her ticket to fame.

Breeze -
Beautiful graceful and powerful, all in the ballet dancer. Control over the wind and air.

Velocity -
Serious committed speedster but only in short bursts who fell in with Allure and Aura, she knows her teammates are not as committed as her.

Sataark (Vigilant) -
Able to shoot energy from her hands, the Indian heroine came with Sona, but has more recently been teaming up with Sparrow.

Sapphire -
Is she really a heroine? No, but she occasionally does good things when the opportunity is there for her to not steal something.

Dart -
She is skilled, competent, and a pervert who might just be a heroine so she can bed as many of the spandex clad cuties as she can. She also can’t resist a bound up heroine.

Not pictured
Wisp -
She’s able to affect gravitational fields, she is very powerful, but nervous, unsure of herself and in constant worry of being captured. It holds her back.

And honestly, that's not counting the villainesses. I really should keep an updated list somewhere.

5. How often do you introduce/create a new heroine? What makes you decide to create a new heroine? Are there any new characters in the development stage right now?

I create one when I get the idea for a costume or for a certain idea or a power. I think my fault is that i like to buy figures on Daz3d, so I keep acquiring more and more figures and naturally they need to be dressed up. So out comes a new costume idea, piece it together.

So here are three new characters, that may see action.

Luna - Hispanic heroine able to store energy at night, she can siphon it off during the day.

Quantum - crazy little engineering girl.

Yet to be named - something something something looks a lot like Carrie Kelley.

6. I know that I have a favorite from among your many heroines, but you didn’t exactly answer your own question in your Devious Journal Entry in early 2016, so DO you have one? And, if so, why is she your favorite?

That's a tough one, mostly because I think they’re all my favorites. Some are infinitely more fun to write than others though. For instance, Liberty with her fourth wall breaking and her being in the first person is a fun character to write. In terms of looks, her costume is one of the best as well, bordering somewhere between cute and sexy. Also interestingly, she’s one of the least in peril characters. She almost never ends up in a bad spot.

Then there is Sloth... who is also a fun sort of character to write...

With all that being said, I would actually pick poor Starling who can't seem to catch a break. She’s this tiny heroine who keeps getting in trouble, hasn’t had anything go right for her, has shown up consistently in peril. She tries to rescue her sister, that goes bad, gets captured, betrays her friends, ends up being almost killed and then ends up a play toy for Dart. Soo... I’m sure at some point I’ll have to come up with some redeeming arc for her.

7. Describe your creative process once you decide to create an image?

I usually find an interesting image somewhere, a bondage picture or something similar and think, ‘ok how did she get there.’ and create the images around it to produce a small story. I figure out which character is going to be there and then the ideas grow from there. Also, I have a lot of old scenes from SHIP, a LOT of scenes that I sometimes adapt into images. The whole sequence about Breeze being a captive of some lowly henchmen came from an rp scene that is probably a good 10 years old now. So really I draw inspiration from whatever is around me.

8. I know you take requests, but do you take commissions too? And if so, what’s your policy regarding requests and/or commissions? What’s the most bizarre one you’ve received so far?

I haven’t as of yet done commissions, mostly because I like to make my own characters. If I were ever to open it up to commissions, I would have a hard time adapting other people’s character ideas. I like taking requests though, not all of them are weird. For instance, someone suggested the “Shoes for Sale” for image, and the follow up with Golden Age Liberty. I like those kinds of requests; they go along with the story and they make sense within the context of the story. I may at some point open it up to commissions, but, for right now, I feel more comfortable with images that spring from my own imagination.

As for weirdest, well, I’ve had requests for very specific things, very specific poses saying very specific things. But I do not like to judge. I have a fetish about cute heroes and heroines in skin tight spandex being tied up and having horrible things done to them, so who the heck am I to judge what turns on other people?

9. Do you read superhero comics? If so, which ones do you enjoy most?

I do, and I like DC comics better. Marvel has some good stories, but it seems to me that in some ways Marvel is getting a little ashamed of their costumes, superhero names and so on, while DC still embraces it. Plus DC’s philosophy on superheroes is a little closer to mine. Marvel likes to portray their heroes as relatable characters; I prefer to think of them as almost godlike figures. I probably got that influence from Watchmen.

But I am also a fan of old school Chris Claremont plotting X-men. All that foreshadowing and twists. Thats kind of how I write the entries.

10. Is there any one piece of your work that you are most proud of and why?

There are a few. Most of it is when I get the lighting just right. That doesn’t always happen, and sometimes it ends up just dark. But this image here with Sloth and Starling is probably one of my favorites. From my own opinion, it captures about everything -- Sloth looking evil and nefarious, Starling looking vulnerable with the implied nudity really driving that force home.

Sometimes when the lighting is just right and gets everything exactly as it should, it all comes together very nicely. I wish I could be more consistent in lighting a scene.

11. What brought you to deviantArt? Did you ever post your work on other sites before arriving here on dA?

I have a few images up on The Wizard's Lair. Those aren’t renders though. They’re the aforementioned manips. Other than that, no not really. I came to DA because, when I started doing renders, I figured I could reach a broader audience that way. For a long time, I did photo manips for myself and a few other people who would get to see them.

12. What do you like most about dA? What one change would you like to see made on the site?

I like that there is a pretty friendly community and a lot of people seem to have their own superheroines. The contests, and everything about it make for a pretty nice place to put down R to hard R type of pictures. And, honestly, thats my favorite kind of picture. I prefer the implied horrible end to a heroine than actually seeing it.

13. What advice do you have for people considering trying their hand at 3D artwork?

Ask questions. Maybe it is easier for others, but for me it was pretty daunting. What is this, what is that, how do you get this to work. I spent a lot of time asking questions about textures and shaders and I got some good answers from people. I appreciate the help I got and, if people ask me questions in return, I like to give them decent answers. I like to help if I can.

14. What new projects will we see from you on DeviantArt?

Oh, probably more of the same. I am actually moving towards a resolution for this ... what about three year long story I’ve been working on. But slowly but surely I’m getting there. I swear! After that, probably even MORE new heroines.

15. What else do you want people to know about you and your artwork?

I do it for myself really. I like what I make and the art that goes with it and I like to share it. So if you enjoy it, just leave a comment. I appreciate them.

Fantastic interview, Robb.
