Description The GNN-1R Gungnir is a modified version of the ENF-4R Enforcer. The Gungnir was built by the Federated Suns after the release of information from the Helm Memory Core. What were most intriguing were the Gauss Technology and the means to extend the range of large laser weaponry.

A prototype was introduced on a modified Enforcer machine but the gauss cannon had numerous teething problems, varying from poor fire velocities to power distribution failures. If that was not bad enough, the extended range lasers created numerous heat overloads. The project was played with but just as an experiment and no vested interest was shown for years.

It was not until the Clan Invasion that forced the then founded Federated Commonwealth to look into any counter attack technology that saw this machine reborn. In joint support from Lyran engineers of Hersperus II, the entire chassis was redone, the lasers corrected, new style double heatsinks were installed and the mech’s Gauss Cannon was perfected.

The odd look of the Gauss Cannon was down to early attempts to make the cannon from the knowledge they earned with the knowledge given by the Helm Memory Core. The square like aperture was down to poor quality capacitors and magnets to create the gauss effect. The net results were numerous humiliating disasters. Since then, Gauss technology got better to perfection, but the barrel is kept as a nostalgic reminder as well as a last resort bludgeoning tool. It is also speculated that the large barrel has a psychological effect to threat forces who assume the gun to be a much more powerful weapon.

Due to the Gauss Cannon’s heavy nature and ammunition requirement, (two tons) the mech had to be bulked up. The addition of three large lasers meant extra weight requiring a better heavier skeleton. As a result, the 50 ton Enforcer went up to a whopping 70 tons and became a new class of machine.

In the process, the armour was upgraded as well as the number of heatsinks. Thirteen tons of armour and additional heatsinks make this machine a threat. By not needing a dedicated ammumition system, the Gungnir can carry on fighting as long as it stays cool or in good condition.

If there are weaknesses, the gauss cannon’s link feed attracts fire. It’s an easy system to replace but on the battlefield there are seldom times to repair. A good hit will cripple the feed. Also the lasers have short range failings, despite its punches at long range.

However these are very small flaws to a great fighting machine.

Great description and drawing. About the feed, why not making it inwards into the gauss weapon? That would reduce its chances of getting hit quite drastically.

Also, I would love to see the Atlas-II done by your hand, although it's Assault Class is more then fitting.

I loved how the feed looked like that . And when in doubt, I rather go for looks than practicality . I don't think I will make the Atlas II; I want to make my own Mechs

Well, that's always a rather successful way to do things. Then you want to make new mechs based on some Battletech Data of prototypes or stuff never shown in the TRO?

Nah, I'll just start building with a rough idea in my head and flesh it out from there.

Pleasure - and if it all goes south, point all in my direction.

Seventy tons...three large lasers...ouch, that things either gonna run hot as hell, be slow as fuck, or have very squishy armor.

Sounds like a Clan design.

The weight dedicated to weaponry is the same as on the Caesar... it might just run a little hotter.

Looks nice, but I have a question: Why has the gun on the right arm (left when you look at the picture) round projectiles but a rectangular gun barell?

Okay, so it's a gauss-rifle, a rail gun using projectiles melted into plasma, but still...even plasma has to be focused somehow, unless you want it to spread into all directions. A plasma shotgun of sorts!

Well, it was a design choice, not a technical one. When it was round, it just looked too much like the heavy lasers. So, to distinguish the Gauss Rifle from the lasers, I gave it a rectangular barrel.

I see. Well guess you gotta find some compromises when you do a 2d design. Anyway, it's still good work!
