Description
Following the alliance of the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth, the Fourth Succession War broke out which shook all of the Inner Sphere. One of these shakes was in the form of the world of Oliver, in Free World League territory.Realizing that their planet was in the wake of a FedCom invasion, many fled deeper into the Marik realm, leaving behind what they deemed either not important or not transportable. One such thing was the Headquarter of the Brigadier Corporation.
When the Lyrans and the Davions arrived, they found the famed facility that had created the notorious quadrupeds mechs, the SCN-1 Scorpion and the GOL-1 Goliath. Here they hoped to find a treasure chest of materials. In a way they did, but not what they hoped. There were skeletons of quads, numerous plans, and a treasure trove of arms and technology but not the kind of materials that would be put to common use.
Nether the less, the Lyrans and the Davions took what they found, including a number of partial built Scorpions and Goliaths.
The PPCs from both machines as well as their useful heavy armament were removed and absorbed into "better" mechs, but many analysts at NAIS regarded the quad-mech a stable and viable support platform. Despite the secrets revealed by the Helm Memory Core, the chassis and skeleton of these mechs were considered waste and only used to prop up the meager few working quad-mechs they had. They could not really work on any other mech, and recycling them was deemed a waste of time and resource.
Nether the less, some at the NAIS decided to put forward a mech that was a fire support platform for more common vehicles, like APCs, armoured cars, and light tanks without wasting better machines for the task. The AFFS was not convinced until the developers pointed out how cheap it was to be. The machines were built, they just needed teeth.
With mixed feelings the AFFS agreed, but restrictions were imposed, mainly nothing expensive or experimental. A single bare Scorpion was selected for experimentation.
To replace the punch of the PPC, a large laser was installed, and for close work, only a pair of meager SRM-2s were added sharing a single ton of ammo. No heatsinks were improved upon, no jump jets were added, and the armour was not increased, despite the weight saving of the SRM-6 and PPC removal.
As their machine prototype took shape, it looked rather promising.
With the success of the Fourth Succession wars, Prince Hanse Davion was more open to ideas, and was planning to do something akin to the Draconis Combine what he achieved against the Capellan Confederation. Tests of this unnamed mech proved to be good but there were flaws with the design, one of which was the lack of secondary support weapons for the SRM-2s. Hanse saw a potential despite his advisors disregard and prejudice to quad-mechs. He gave the go-ahead for more work and testing but nothing ridiculous.
The designers installed medium pulse lasers for medium support range, and changed the laser to that of an extended range variant. Problems were two fold – the pulse lasers were twice the weight of ordinary medium lasers, and generated more heat – the ER large laser emitted near twice that of the standard system. However in an ironic way the re-introduction of the Double Heatsink, was used on the prototype as well as other experimental designs, to see the limits of the new technology. It worked.
The machine was a triumph
In trials the Hypochilus (ancient word for Spider or some creepy insect) was quite lethal, especially to light and conventional forces, and since the new heat sinks fitted around the engine, there was a bit of weight to increase the armour. The re-design was impressive. It was designated to serve small rear forces, like special commando units where a stable variable platform can deliver supporting fire. Against a mech of its tonnage and power it still has the quad weaknesses but with better weapons compared to the Scorpion and Goliath, it can stand its own.
The Hypochilus is so called because the redesign makes it look fierce, like a terrifying spider. Its high arched legs and harder compact body radiated fear.
It is believed that it was (possibly) one of the reasons why quad-mechs started to make a good reputation recovery in the Inner Sphere.

Tarancheler has two medium lasers and an srm-2. This thing has twice that firepower, AND a large laser tossed in for shits and grins! I LOVE IT
