well, right now I've only got the first chapter written and posted. Its a swashbuckling tail, intended to be in a steampunk world, or at least thats what I'm working on. I wanted to do something different than an epic tail of heroism which is the general scheme of past writings, so I went for a sort of pirates/treasure hunters tale. I'll post more of it as I get along and get Internet access. Currently I have access on and off via the Starbucks cafe.

The trigger looks rather big; I have a hard time telling how big a hand is compared to this.

Robbe25 In reply to Marzipanzers [2013-08-25 14:56:57 +0000 UTC]

I think you should look to the grip for that comparison. It's a preset grip, unaltered in size.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

The-Psychonaut [2013-08-25 06:17:18 +0000 UTC]

Um....I think the initial blow back would be too violent for this design to be tenable; the hand is too close to the explosion. While that works with a derringer or something it doesn't work here because the bulk of the gun's weight, the chamber, isn't resting above the hand. It's behind it; which will increase the pressure on the wrist when it snaps up slightly from the bullet's expulsion. Also...uh, that guard would inhibit one's grip by putting the extended arm at an angle with the barrel. The thing you're pointing the bullet with. Also the awkward grip puts more strain on the tendons and wrists, causing extraneous fatigue while drastically reducing accuracy. Something unacceptable in combat. It's a flashy design, but, lamentably, it's not viable.

I understand the lust for originality that compels any artist, myself included; but when it comes to weaponry simple is always best. There's a reason the Kalashnikov is the bread and butter of the modern day militant. My advice is to focus more on ease of use: visual dynamism will follow.

Robbe25 In reply to The-Psychonaut [2013-08-25 07:40:18 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree with you. It's not at all viable.

But the good thing with art (using the term loosely here) is that it's not bound by what is viable or possible. And thus, I don't limit myself to that either when making a gun. For me, that just isn't a factor when building. For the one part, it's because I don't care. And for the other part, it's because I don't know about the workings of guns to make it a factor, it would make the process of building a gun a hassle, and, at least for me, not fun.

So not to sound like a broken record (sorry): form over function. (Hey, it's the only defense I have )

The-Psychonaut In reply to Robbe25 [2013-08-25 08:02:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a weapons engineer either, dude. Just a gun owner from a conceal and carry state who spend time on the firing range as a kid.

For me personally I just emphasize that it "looks" functional. I like that shade of realism. To me it just makes the fantasy a little more compelling. Also there's nothing more heart breaking than having a model gun in your hand that's a chore to hold. But I salute your artistic spin on this. Have a good one, man.

Well, the only experience I've had with guns was at my Bundeswehr trainging (Germany obligatory military service), but that was only 2 months and with 30 years old G3s (which I didn't even get to shoot).

Hey, we all go about this differently. There are people who work with the new version of PMG whose goal with every guns is to have it completely recolourable (not easy when you want it to have shading and different colours), some people only make recreations of existing guns, there are also (unfortunately) those who only use the preset guns already in both versions of PMG (M4s, AUGs and so on) and whose only "creative" input is to put an ACOG or a silencer on a gun... and lastly, there's people like me, who just like guns for there aesthetic appeal, and usually nothing more...

I didn't know they mandated martial instruction in Germany. Good for you guys! I've always maintained that everyone should have at least some combat instruction; it's why I believe martial arts like muy thai, silat and parkour should be P.E. curriculum. Not badminton. I don't believe in breeding soldier, but competent citizens are quite another story. Instead of versing children in self defense, we teach them how to chase balls.

My experience with guns is mostly recreational: I hail from a very gun friendly state and I was raised by hunters. However I'm by no stretch obsessed with the technical or cultural aspects of gunmanship. I'm just a libertarian humanist who knows how to man a hand gun and line the sights on a rifle. Just another "gun behind every blade of grass" to quote Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.

What is the native martial art of Germany? Kajukenbo, Jeet Kune Do and MCMAP are American made. What sort of lethal footwork is Germany's claim to fame?

Well, we don't anymore. The so called "Wehrpflicht" (compulsory military service) was stopped earlier this year in favor of a leaner, proffesionals only army.

Also, I don't think there is a German martial art...

Uh oh. That sounds like somebody doesn't want civilians trained in combat to me; but, that may just be personally bias talking. That's cool that you're schooled in some ordinance though. Way to go.

Well, the American martial arts are, barring the native American knife styles www.youtube.com/watch?v=9exv5B… and guerilla tactics still in practice, are mostly fighting systems synthesized from existing ones. Kajukenbo is basically like Krav Maga. It takes from Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Escrima, Karate and Judo; but it uses only the choicest techniques for street level application. Jeet Kune Do is fifty percent wing chun www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5DbB8…, savate and pretty much the rest is based on user preference. It's a system that emphasizes self customization www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpFSwQ… . It was developed by Bruce Lee. I mean you can argue Capoeira www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-z6XH… is an American style by way of Brazil, but I'm referring to U.S. styles.

Not to sound arrogant (although in an "old continent" kind of way it probably will; sorry), but that seems to me a uniquely american point of view, that mistrust in government. It might be wise to have it, but that's just not the way most Germans or Europeans (especially us though, we've never really gotten rid of that authoritarian mindset, unfortunately) think and feel. Maybe we're naive...

Lol. Dude, you're being perfectly cordial and I salute you for it. You're actually very correct.

America's history is...that of the outlaw. Our founders were religious and political renegades and refugees. Convicts. Slaves. Many of them forced into the wilderness at the crown's behest. Forcibly removed to a strange land resplendent with people forged from centuries of feudal war. Most of them none too pleased to meet us. Then our slave masters very politely explained we had to fight a war for them with these people; which we happily did: and then were treated as back water trash, even though that's what the English wanted us to be; because as smugglers, pirages and crooks we could cut corners, make profit and then pay taxes back to the crown. From the beginning the colonies were a black market cash cow, to be ignored politically at all cost and to be exploited economically whenever possible. In consequence, we have a very acute 'Fuck the po-lice!' mentality.

Americans can't stand someone telling us what to do.(chuckle) Especially when they're not family.

But our traditional distrust is actually borne of European minds like Locke and Montesquieu, burgeoned further by the Unitarian, atheistic and deist members of our forefathers, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Their sophistry was refined by the Enlightenment Age. Jefferson once said, "when the people fear the government, it's tyranny. When the government fears the people, it's liberty." Those men picked up their literacy from Europe's greatest scholars; and where would Europa's intellectual titans be where it not for the gumption of an earnest German black smith named Johannes Gutenberg?

I know that (have heard it often enough), but it's an attitude that never really developped here. I think we were just always too content with our government. After the war, our several governments worked well in returning our country to something that other nations could respect again. And in the 50s - 60s people were just content (during the so-called "Wirtschaftswunder" - the economical wonder), we had rebuilt our industry and people were well paid and could afford stuff. The governments encouraged that. They had their flaws, but all in all we had the feeling that we were being all fairly cared for. We had no reason to mistrust our government.

Nowadays? Nowadays it seems that the government is really only working for the richest people and the biggest companies and banks. Even so, nobody's (at least not enough people) really distrustfil of the government. They're just mumbling, complaining.. but in the upcoming election, they'll vote for the main conservative party again... Which doesn't really matter since all other parties are all more or less chips of the conservative block.

(a tip of my newsboy) Pardon my recital. Nobody likes having facts spat at them.

Voting conservative is usually a bad, bad gamble. They tend to favor big business and big business export labor because it's cheaper. It's their right because they're business is their property to do with as they please: but...the thing is, too many do it with no sense of economic context; with no concern ultimately for their thousands upon thousands of staff. Nobody wants to risk a leaner check. Nobody wants to have one less yacht to buy next month.

The rich sponsor the politicians so inevitably the politicians are going to orally polish their balls; it's called greasing the wheels, man. It's career politics. Of course, you know this. You're far, far from what I would call a simpleton. Frankly you're quite smart: so what to do?

Well, I would suggest (because I like answers over questions) emphasizing programs, policies and initiatives that favor empowering the people rather than swelling an already bloated bureaucratic system. Libertarianism isn't a conservative movement: it's an individualistic one. It upholds freedom of speech, assembly, the right to bear arms and, foremostly, urges people to realize that government does not exist to dictate behavior by banning things like "hate speech" but to preserve the people through administrations like the post office, road construction, public transportation, medical care, the police and the military; and that is all. People should dictate their own behavior and allow society in kind to either approve, tolerate or remonstrate them for it. The problem that stems from every regime is the lust to centralize society, to gentrify it.

The best way to get people off the authoritarian tit is to explain to them that the government is an experiment not a final conclusion; and as such what matters most is the individual's rights. By observing the human you dignify humanity. When we throw each other under the totalitarian bus, just for a scrap of momentary safety or order, we've proven we merit neither. If we preserve our choices we preserve the whole's choices: we are the whole.

Believe this is not a Yankee-doodle-dandee rant. The conservatives are not saying this. They're the ones saying I can't smoke what I want to smoke, fuck who I want to fuck, think what I want to think and say what I want to say; because it's "offensive" or "blaspemist" or "not natural". These are the people demanding people not say their god's name in vain while praying to him in public. Even though that dogma and those prayers are for their sake, not mine. These are the assholes who want to brain wash their kids with fairy tales instead of facts www.youtube.com/watch?v=NloC20…  www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LE8fH…. Trust me, dude, I don't roll with GOP.

Ah fuck... I had a whole paragraph written out (rather incoherent stuff though) and then I hit refresh.

To sum it up: I agree with you, not necessarily on the "right to bear arms"-part (remember, here in Germany, this is not an issue as we have gun control that usually works. You can get guns illegally, but it's rather difficult); but I agree with the notion that the state/government should provide post services, road construction, public transportation, medical care, police and military (although that only to defend the country). I would also expand that list to include free education (including college and university), water and electricity. Especially these last two need to be taken away from companies whose goal is not to serve the people, but to make a profit. I mean, it is kind of perverted when people have to make debts in order to pay for electricity!
