Description Had a request for cougars, so here's a cougar. Hooray!

San Diego Zoo, 2015. Turns out this particular cougar has an intense aversion to wheelchairs. As is, she panics, lashes out, attacks the fence, drools, etc. And given the huge crowds that San Diego draws, she was a pretty stressed out animal. I think I arrived shortly after another wheelchair incident. Beautiful girl, and the first mountain lion I'd seen in ~10 years, but at the same I kinda wished they'd just keep her off exhibit, yanno?

She kind of reminds me of this lovely 18-year-old cougar (a rescued cat that cannot return to the wild) named Mocha, who in this video, was just having a bad day, like everyone has now and again:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuhU1x… . Normally, she's very sweet and affectionate.

Indeed they are. You should see her during her morning visits with her owner:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6Fp6u… . (and for the record, that's just the inside part of her enclosure that looks into his office.) Β

I have no idea what camera you have, but I can spot a good lens real fast and you have one in that set-up of yours. Wonderful image, and wonderful ability to make it work at a high level. Nice work and oh yeah....compliments to the model too as that big girl could put a slap on your face that would be a life changer. Yes, I just read your comment above and it's sad to me that we make them live in an environment that is totally scary...foreign and full of anxiety in many ways because they're not used to it. I hope she calms down and feels the love at some point but it's better than getting shot at by blood thirsty rotten hunters I guess..

I hope so too. If the San Diego Zoo is even a fraction of the zoo that they've been built up to be, they've figured out a solution that works for her by now. Glad you like the photo. I do indeed have a pretty good lens. Nikon 300mm f/4. Really great for portraits, and really great for longer distance shots as well. Thanks a bunch!

Yes, well even I can think of the answer to that big girl. Put her in another area that is safe and out of the public eye. Let her feel more isolated out of the front lines of the tourists view like they really are in the wild. People just can't grasp the fact that most wild animals are not the "drunken slobbering party animals" that Β a good share of human beings are.

I wish we could JUST LEAVE animals alone and let them have some of their land back land and stop killing them and doing everything to can to wipe them out. We just CAN'T leave anything alone and must poke, prod, shoot, hunt, tranquilize, cage and generally traumatize everything we come into contact with.
We killed maybe 100 MILLION Indians and stole their land to create this country and so far people like us have slaughtered about 250 MILLION innocent human beings in various trumped up wars of "mass destruction" that was all a lie and on it goes.Β
Did you know that 85% of all war casualties are always woman, kids and old men and woman too sick to flea and are always civilians with no uniform at all and on it goes. Even in Iraq we murdered 600,00 civilians so far in accidental bombings and so forth while our corrupt government admits to about 350,000.Β

My whole point here my friend is this.....UNTIL we learn to be kind and have compassion for our fellow human beings, then what chance as animals have in this world?? We don't care one bit about killing humans so animals have no chance and to be honest....as a decorated soldier...... I have to admit to you I love animals more than most human beings right now I'm sorry to day. And I am sorry to say that.

Anyhow....keep up the great work and that camera of your is sure a beauty.

She's gorgeous, but yeah, you can see this is not a happy cat. I agree, if she is freaking out, they really should consider taking her off exhibit, as much as I love the San Diego Zoo.

Yup. This zoo is supposedly world-class, so hopefully they've figured out something that works for her by now.

Cougars always seem like the angriest of the big cats to me. They have that really intense, borderline angry expression mastered.

Yes however, I have always loved them, respected them.Β  They are predators and we are lower on the food chain.Β  We (the people of Kansas), have said for years that we have puma's here.Β  Wildlife, fish and Game denied that until a year or so ago when people started putting our camera's.Β  A school was even put on hold because it was in their neighborhood.Β  Still, love them anyway.Β  Hugs
