i want to try this! is it possible with Canon Eos 400d with a 18-55mm lens? Please say yes Until today, i couldn't find the right values but i still believe

The lens is more or less irelivant, but that should work well.
You will need a tripod though, I'm pretty sure you should be able to with a 400D, you just need to use the manual shutter speed controls to go around 30 seconds or more.
This was an 8 minute exposure.

Indeed, the colours look amazing in this image! The lighting trails are awesome, and so intriguing as I really have no idea how to create that effect. I also find the streetlights interesting...while they may appear too bright, taking a bit of attention away from the light trails, I like how they seem to appear as strong beacons in the sky. Great image though, keep it up!

fantastic shot.. im not sure what i can offer in the way of critique, as you pretty much nailed it here.. i would maybe use a piece of card to cover 1/2 the lens, to get the streetlight glare down.... but that would be difficult to do

so keep it as is, and keep shooting like this

hey! nice capture!

this is quite different from other this kind of photos..
because the lights goes so nicely, so bright on the left side (because those are the frontlights) and darker and red on the right.

nice job

A fantastic shot! Shots like this make me think that the switch to medium format is something that would be very worthy. Not to say that 35mm can't produce good results, but the 6x6 looks amazingly clean and crisp. Beautiful photo.

wow this is spectacular!
i was wondering how u can get such effects where the lights of the moving object is captured such a way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoBBoX In reply to Hellclanner [2006-10-28 22:02:50 +0000 UTC]

Long exposure on a tripod, everything that's moving get's blurred and everything that stays still does just that.
Only the lights show because the cars themselves aren't bright enough to have a visible effect on the film since they don't stay in one spot very long.

I don't know a thing about these kind of shots, but you must have chosen a real long exposure !?
I especially like the wide striped light line on the left side

dubdeuces388 [2006-10-18 06:12:26 +0000 UTC]

awesome picture ... ive tried to experiment with shots like this but can rarely seem to get them right

what ISO do you shoot at, and about how long are your exposures?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoBBoX In reply to dubdeuces388 [2006-10-18 06:28:33 +0000 UTC]

I use 100 Speed Reala film, this exposure was either 4 or 8 minutes.
I do a decent amount of bracketing, it's very important to have a good tripod and either a shutter release or use your cameras self timer.
Also, if you have a mirror lockup option, use it.

dubdeuces388 In reply to RoBBoX [2006-10-18 07:40:09 +0000 UTC]

very nice ... im moving more towards digital and hoping to get a new DSLR this upcoming summer

that way i can use 50 Speed ISO and set my exposure to any length

when i first tried it, it was with an old Nikon 35mm SLR and i used 100 and 200 ISO film - however i wasnt getting anything good, the only good shot i got was with a compact digital camera: [link]

RoBBoX In reply to dubdeuces388 [2006-10-26 02:51:46 +0000 UTC]

In my experience, for night exposures, digital can't hold a candle to film, but if you're going to keep your SLR, it's a good idea to test things with your digi and then shoot them on film with the already tested exposure, that way you'll get a better sense of what kind of light needs what kind of exposure.
