He's not in the anime. Drawings of him are fan interpretations of BB in the Another Note: LA BB Murder Case novel.

forgive me, I'm very new to the Death Note manga and don't know all the characters yet. but why do beyond birthday and L look similar? is there some connection?

Because Beyond strives to be like L, and mimicks him in a very grotesque way. He makes himself look like L, sits like him, talks like him, walks like him, etc. The only difference between them is that Beyond wants to be the world's 'best' criminal.
