Description During a routine check with Maundrian III monitoring outpost, the crew of the Rama is presented with a situation that is anything but routine!

=============

A story without an actual story
It was unintentional, but there's something sort of Berkeyesque about the piece... at least to my eye.

Planet background by GrahamTG w/ textures courtesy of Nasa and Starbase1. Starfield by FrostBo. Archer class scout mesh created by Mark Azevedo - www.3dmaz.com. Ship design by Masao Okazaki. A much smaller ship, though.

I just so love that rustic nature of that space station!

And hmmm....an intriguing story with a universe of possibilities!!

I was aiming for something in the station that would evoke Matt Jeffries' design work.

Hello. I'm new here, a model builder, and I just want to say how much I admire your stuff. May I have permission to possibly take some of your design ideas, an apply them to some of my existing Trek Models? ...just askin...

"Berkeyesque" is a great word to use here, as his art was what I thought of when I first saw this great image. I wondered if you were paying homage to him before I read your comments. Thank you for posting and share this and all your great art.

I can see the Rama appearing in future "Star Trek" novels set in the "TOS" era.

Maybe its because I was watching "the walking dead" on Netflix, but I just can't help but think the shit is going to hit the fan on that station.

Why mad scientists keep trying to resurrect the dead with nanites on space stations? Don't they know its never going to end well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to davbla [2012-02-06 21:58:13 +0000 UTC]

Mad scientist need some kind of handbook that they can all refer to so they won't keep making the same mistakes, over and over again....

yeah loved it! 'nice that there wasn't a definitive 'technobable' answer...s'pose it's like scientists are fond of saying:"the one thing we can say for certain is that we just don't know!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to gazzatrek [2012-02-05 16:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Maybe that's one thing that sets apart science and religion. In science it's perfectly valid to say "I just don't know."

RobCaswell In reply to DeDani [2012-02-05 02:49:45 +0000 UTC]

Why do you say "between"? Just curious what visuals point you in that direction. My goal was for something planted in the TOS era.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeDani In reply to RobCaswell [2012-02-05 10:45:02 +0000 UTC]

Its the shape of your ship. Take a look at the soucer. It looks more like the new ships of Star Trek (VOY). Colors are more like TOS. Thats why I say "between".

karanua [2012-02-04 09:57:39 +0000 UTC]

Ok just a quick thought - hows that standard TOS shuttle dock with the Archer? I don't recall seeing a standard collar on any of those old ships and the shuttle is designed to land and debark its passengers in a pressurised bay something that the Archer is lacking. Nice use of that asteroid outpost actually its a very good composition itself, I think it would be right at home alongside those mock-up book dustjackets you did.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to karanua [2012-02-05 02:48:16 +0000 UTC]

The shuttlecraft is actually entering one of the station's bays and is not docking with the Rama (which is docked at a different bay). The arrangement would probably be more obvious from another angle. That bit of visual ambiguity may the image's weakest point.

Hm. I like your "Archer book cover" idea! Hmmmmmm..... let me stew on that. It's tickling me!
