Description Chief Science Officer’s Log, Thurann reporting. While rogue planets may be hard to detect, they are not all that uncommon. However rogue planets with tiny satellites of ultra dense matter are… well, this is the first found by Federation science.

The Captain ordered the Spaker in for a close rendezvous with the satellite, which proved to clearly be of an unnatural origin. Measuring almost 200 meters in length, the object has a mass thirty times greater than if it were made of any known naturally occurring matter. Once we are done analyzing the remote sensor results we are sending in a small science team for a closer inspection on the shuttlecraft Burton.

--------

Ship’s log… Lieutenant Xu reporting aboard the shuttlecraft Burton. Our team has been trying for three hours now to regain entrance to the U.S.S. Spaker. We embarked on the shuttlecraft for a close inspection of the object that we’d detected around the newly discovered rogue world of IPO5567. While completing a circuit of the object, there was… well, an “event”. We’re not sure what else to call it. The sensor data we gathered of the happening seems wildly irrational, supporting no conclusions we’ve been able to come up with.

The event seemed to knock out our communications with the Spaker, so we immediately returned to the ship. However the Spaker seems… well, vacant. We were waiting before the hanger doors for fifteen minutes without effect. We couldn’t even see any motion in the ship’s windows. It’s like the whole crew vanished but left the lights on.

We have been scouting the hull for alternate entry ideas and Ensign Rivaldo has a idea that’s just crazy enough to work. However, in light of this silence from the Spaker we are filled with apprehension as to what waits for us on our return.

That was first proposed back in '75-'76 in Franz Joseph's "Starfleet Technical Manual", designed in cooperation with Gene Roddenberry. This was the Scout/Destroyer configuration which has since found its way into the quasi-canonical lore.

oh geez....but you will continue that story, wont you?
you have to!
Please!

And like someone else already said, I was reminded on that "planet-killer-thing" too, when I first saw that..."satellite". And I thought - without having the story read - that thing looks evil. Damn evil.
And look, I was right!
But it looks cool too.
And now: Carry on with that story!

erm...besides: Pretty great "dark lighting"!

Sorry... I know I'm a tease. I love setting up mysteries, but actually solving them requires greater effort and finesse

I'm glad you like the lighting. You know the difficulty I have in going "to the dark side". I always seem to err on the side of too much light rather than too little. I'm forever looking for that ideal tightrope to walk.

LmAnt In reply to RobCaswell [2011-09-12 07:25:17 +0000 UTC]

well, you know,...actually I didn't seriously expect a "solving"
I know how difficult it is to move a story from a teaser to an actual ending.
But it was worth trying

You know, I've never seen a curtain in front of a window in any star trek series. I guess everyone in the 23rd century and later are all exhibitionists?
I think I would have liked to see more lighting in this one, but considering the ship is vacant, it also makes sense...
Nicely done, all in all

RobCaswell In reply to Mann-of-LaMancha [2011-09-06 00:32:13 +0000 UTC]

Well I was shoot for that "deep space" look... and over-lighting the windows often leads to a wonky look. But your comment is noted, sir!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mann-of-LaMancha In reply to RobCaswell [2011-09-06 01:07:53 +0000 UTC]

well, yeah of course, true. If you weren't within earth orbit's distance from a yellow dwarf star, then you'd be in "deep space" and then it would likely be pitch black unless you had external lighting illuminating some part of the hull.

heh Tell me about it! I know about over-lighting. phew!

Great looking picture, and I really like the lighting. For that class of ship, I bet the shuttle bay really takes up a huge amount of space. Probably not the most efficient design for a space ship, but what the heck, it''s Star Trek.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to Seaview123 [2011-09-06 00:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Actually I picture it as a tiny bay - not all the facilities of a Connie. Just enough to squeak in two shuttlecraft and barely keep 'em running.

Thats one landing bay I've never liked with its guide target on the roof. Very tight indeed those bays.
You've done a wonderful job on this mate, the understated lighting really shows off the ship.

"Guide target on the roof"? You talkin' the transporter panels?

Glad ya like! This is a really pretty model to work with. I like his recessed windows and doors.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

karanua In reply to RobCaswell [2011-09-06 01:17:04 +0000 UTC]

no the landing target for shuttlecraft pilots is on the roof of the landing bay in these cubbies as opposed to being on the deck, tight on space internally so whatever works.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to karanua [2011-09-06 03:54:54 +0000 UTC]

Huh. It is? In whose design?

In a way it makes sense.... and in others it doesn't. You approach from below so any landing assistance markings should be on the ceiling, but you'd land it on the floor so landing markings should be down there.

Aw hell, just land the thing by computer control so we don't have to worry 'bout it!
