Description No offense to y'all, but I wanted to do a space combat pic in the Romulam War Era that was a little more.... "feasible". Engagements would be at VERY long ranges (you'd probably never see your adversary as anything more than a moving spec on the starry background) and ships would not cluster as a well placed nuke could easily take out an entire task force. If anything these ships are STILL too close for combat conditions.

One of the reasons the SFM Romulan War Era designs appeal to me is that they remind me of the ship designs from the comic Erma Felna [link] - one of the best/most realistic starship battle depictions in a visual medium. I guess this images is a little reminiscent of this: [link] . So consider this a V2.0

Models and textures by Dave Metlesits [link] , ship design by Masao Okazaki [link] .

Yeah, I'm not sure how rare they are these days. Amazon has some listings:

Ouch! I can just hear a silent BOOOM!!!

I wouldn't worry about too much mate, from my POV no one has done the Romulan War correctly and everyone keeps forgetting there should be a Klingon War before it.

If an antimatter reactor blows up in space and there are no trees to hear it, does it make a noise?

celticarchie In reply to RobCaswell [2011-06-17 16:53:57 +0000 UTC]

It's all relative I guess!

Actually, the no sound in space thing is not entirely accurate, if a space ship was to blow up and it's atmosphere vent into space, in that expanding curtain of air you'd have sound.

Hey mate, how do I post a poll around here? Is there a tut/help section?

And let's not forget that moving in to close range is extremely dangerous due to the Romulan plasma weapons. The FF lost many ships because of them in Randolph's Gamble.

Thanks, man. It's tough to do it and keep it visually interesting. It's so much easier to illustrate a traffic jam of starships, but the realities of being that close - especially in combat situations - just doesn't stack up. "Wrath of Khan" was a fun film, but it seems to have really kicked off this trend of space combat in spitting distance.

I like this.

Are you going to do any Romulan ships? I'm curious to see what you'd do. Most folk use models that look like they came from Enterprise, and hence look too advanced to have lost a war to the ships of this era.

It would be nice to see a warbird that looked more appropriate.

Oh, you awful troll thing you!!!!

Yep - what Ter said. Staying true to the Starfleet Museum details (many of which pre-date the Enterprise series) I'll be using the "Cabbage" class Romulans (aka "jellyfish") if you ever seen one. But again, distance is a factor... and it seems if you got close enough to a disabled one, they'd self-destruct.

Considering the payload of a photon torpedo (1.5 kg frozen anti-deuterium) that would put the yield of a single torpedo at about 60 megatons, with ships trading shots regularly...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to brewski2444 [2011-06-16 02:32:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't think they had photon torps back then.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

brewski2444 In reply to RobCaswell [2011-06-16 02:42:56 +0000 UTC]

But the point being the "structural integrity field" AKA "polarizing the hull plating" allowed a ship to survive a nuke type hit (but the installing of shields really sparked the kind of protection needed). So that distance is probably OK for stopping an adjacent ship taking a hit...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to brewski2444 [2011-06-16 14:36:37 +0000 UTC]

That's an "Enterprise" thing, right? Even if I chose to embrace that series' details for the era, there are countless other tactical and functional reasons that dictate maintaining significant distance between vessels.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

brewski2444 In reply to RobCaswell [2011-06-16 23:45:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes but the big thing was the fact that a ships warp core could breach, letting out the store of antimatter (since the feds at that time had antimatter reactors) a ship exploding would release an explosion in the gigaton range...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to brewski2444 [2011-06-16 23:47:21 +0000 UTC]

Yup! That's another darn good reason to keep their distance

Robby-Robert [2011-06-16 02:03:58 +0000 UTC]

The idea that Nukes could be an effective weapon in space is just not feasible. There is no medium to conduct any kind of pressure wave, or concussion. They might be okay against a single target, but against a ship already shielded against interplanetary and interstellar radiation, it would be highly inefficient.
A more effective weapon would be a kinetic kill device, or rail gun. Even a laser, over time, to overheat an enemies shields and hull would be better. Or missiles to penetrate hulls, but they would be easy to pick off with lasers.
Nice pic though!

RobCaswell In reply to Robby-Robert [2011-06-16 02:34:18 +0000 UTC]

You're preaching to the choir. I think it'd be great if they used kinetic kill weapons, but that ain't how the detail got filled in by writers and designers. Again, that's one reason I like the Albedo combat so much. It's almost all kinetic weapons.

Well said and well executed. Plus, don't forget that the Federation has lost the technology for television at this point - so a blip is pretty much the limit of it.
