Description
While working on FASA's TNG Officer's Manual, a few of the subjects that needed illustration were things that had never (or not yet) appeared in the show. For me those were the most fun as I could stretch my design legs. The book called for a picture of a standard probe carried by the Enterprise-D so I did my best to get into my WWAPD (what would Andy Probert draw) headspace, trying to play off some of the D's design elements.I think this design made into the final product, but I actually don't own a copy (long story) so it might have been one of the few that got dropped out before press time.

Who made the ships in that book? You did?
Got anything interesting on em'? I found a protoformed one-nacelle Decker in Gateways 10.

IIRC the book didn't have many ships.... but yes, I designed this probe.

When i see the old Fasa suff, Im always sad that Star Trek never made a complete Canon like Star Wars.
But who knows ? The new Books took already some Pieces from Fasa. Maybe your work becomes official in the Future

I think the horse is outta the barn on that. Canon's become fluid w/ Trek.

It WAS yesterday... a long time ago
Really, it's a thrill to know that my images stuck in people's mind after all this time!

Woa! I got almost the entire FASA's Star Trek in my collection. I'll check if it's in the TNG manual.

The deflector style part at the front is a really nice touch - much more in keeping with what you'd expect a probe to look like than the torpedoes. And it definitely has an Andrew Probert feel. Would love to see more of these, as I don't think I've ever seen the TNG Officer's Manual.

I think that product came and went quickly. The first printing immediately sold out, and I think there was a limited second printing. Unfortunately pieces like this were rare in the assignment. There were a lot of uniforms and hand held gear - most of which was already established. This is the closest I got to any ship design on that job.

Actually it did get included; TNG Officer's Manual (2012) page 79. But they edited out the text labels for some reason. I knew I had seen that probe before somewhere...
If you have any more ST:RPG pics I'd love to see them. I have fond memories of that game. Thanks for sharing!

I may scan a few more of the bits - maybe some of those transitional uniform designs.

Well... that's supposed to be a stylized starry space background and not a round-cornered Safety Monolith....

In a way that's sad... but in another way it's very good because it makes it the first time this design would have seen the light of day. A DA exclusive!

Well... now ya know. Maybe. The book was an officially licensed product... for about six months.

Seems a good deal more practical than trying to fit a probe into a photon torpedo body. The sensor booms are a great touch, and I love the attitude jets. The design aesthetic definitely fits with the organic contours established early in the Next Gen hardware.

Yeah, I pretty much ditched the movie notion of the "coffin probes", trying to make something that looked a bit more like a scientific instrument. Early TNG tech was easy. Everything just had to look like a warp-driven Ford Taurus!
