Description
The Starfleet scout ship, USS Rama, observes a migrating flock on avian aliens while two crew members take in a more intimate observation while riding the ship's two exploration bikes. The "bikers" wear environment belts which serve as aeroshells, negating the need for windscreens on the vehicles. Background by Koko_Stock with many modifications. I agree - hey trek is about advanced tech right?
Even with the wash - still a great scene - well done and thanks for sharing

Those envirobelts were featured in the Star Trek Animated Series when they had to go underwater or out in space but didn't want to spend time drawing suits.

I've heard various reasons why they didn't do the suits in TAS... but whatever the reason, I think this is the better call. It's more in keeping with Trek's high tech and TOS suits were just gawd-awful designs

Are the avian aliens an intelligent species? I have othen wondered why we have not seen intelligent avian beings in Star Trek.

Actually, we have seen an avian race in Star Trek. It was in the animated series. The episode was called "Jihad" and the character was a member of the Skor:

i know this class is roughly the equivalent of the scout/courier in traveller so are the bikes the only subcraft she can carry?

Well... depends on who you ask, I guess. The Vanguard books describe a pair of six wheeled vehicles, but in me n' Ptrope's study of the ship, there would be enough room for those. Ptrope's created his one contained designs for a grav explorer [link] , but it's certainly possible that Starfleet would have variety available.

I love the stories you tell with just a single picture. This is a nice wonderful side of Starfleet exploration. The kind of stories you'd want to experience.

Glad you share my view. I'd much rather see a story like this, immersed in alien wonder and mystery, than some pissed off human just trying to kill people... (sigh)

It's the jetcycles that pinged it for me...
...and thinking about it, a show about a teensy little scout ship like USS Rama here would be perfect for plots with courier missions, exploration, shadowing, and the like and plenty of character drama. Starfleet Firefly.

I know I'm falling into a pit filled with rabid tigers, land mines and bees on this one, but I think there's every chance to see such things. This latest installment I was very pleased with in every way and one of the cooler things was at the first Kirk telling McCoy they were in the running for the 5-year mission. The chance to go and do the explorations and blaze the trail... Kirk was positively giddy at the prospect. I'm very looking forward to the discoveries this crew will make.

We'll see. So far they haven't used the opportunity to do anything buy throw disgruntled megalomaniacs at the Enterprise.... whose engineering room STILL looks like a brewery, I hear?

NICELabs In reply to RobCaswell [2013-05-24 18:55:11 +0000 UTC]
This time they got it right. Their adversary is done perfectly in my opinion. I'm not a blind trek fan. The next gen stuff I can't really stand, but the original series I've loved since I was six and Mom called me in from playing in the yard with "you might want to watch this" and the "Who Mourns for Adonis" episode was on. These two movies I've been very critical over as trek helped shaped my formative years. In no way did I want them to mess up my memories, but every one of my fears were tested and relieved. Yah they're not exploring much yet and they fire some weapons and some things blow up, but the characters are solid.
As for the engine room a brewery is a still, so no surprise there (couldn't resist
) It's one of those movie things. If they hadn't told us behind the scenes it was a brewery they used as a set it'd look like it does: A huge working space... an engineering deck rather than fall back to little rooms with bad carpeting cheesy neon. I will say that the antimatter chamber looks like a functioning supercollider. It doesn't look like a prop.
