Description
The Starfleet scout ship, USS Rama, observes a migrating flock on avian aliens while two crew members take in a more intimate observation while riding the ship's two exploration bikes. The "bikers" wear environment belts which serve as aeroshells, negating the need for windscreens on the vehicles. Background by Koko_Stock with many modifications. Beautifully finished composition, and it's great to see the environmental/life support belts in use

I thought they were a bit "meh" back in the 70's, but I've come to prefer them over the clunky 23rd century space suits. They feel more in line with Trek's high tech.

I think this is my favorite of your pictures. I've always been fascinated by flying creatures like this.
And I like motorcycles too! And the whole atmosphere is full of action and yet peaceful as well.
GOD bless

Glad ya like the bikes. Y'know, I look at this one as see "Trek", but little here has any Trek identification that the mainstream could tie into. That's OK. I'm not complaining, but this piece drives deep into the hardcore TOS-devotee mythos... and then some. It's a playground that I enjoy

Hopefully, once I get it started.
To be a little different however, it is set in the 2370s and focuses on a small crew of civilians.

Oh no, absolutely not. In fact the most favorite episodes of all time for me are those that deal with scientific discovery. Action is not a bad thing, but it gets tiresome after a while!

RobCaswell In reply to overseer [2013-05-24 19:04:00 +0000 UTC]
Agreed. It's "balance" and creativity that make for a good episode/show.

Well, there is a time and place for everything; and certainly, even the most positive outlook into our future cannot be all fluff and roses, but still, even in war science and research continue and that should also be reflected in Star Trek. For the most part they do that, but if you look particularly at the recent JJ re-invention; there is maybe 5% science involved (in terms of research, exploration etc.) The remainder is action and kaboom (without spoilering too much).
While that is OK from an entertainment aspect, it is not Star Trek for me. Star Trek for me are episodes (like early on in VOY), when they are inside a nebula trying to figure out what happened, or when a second Picard suddenly shows up, or a small universe gets caught in a Runabout's warp nacelle. That is what science is all about.

RobCaswell In reply to overseer [2013-05-29 19:59:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah... there's little to no intellectual meat to JJ's stuff ("Red Matter"????), but then he's publicly stated that he hated Trek's intellectual side.

Yeah, well, I happen to like exactly that. It has made Star Trek devoid of too much idiocy in the fan base (I know I'm being blunt here); but hey, I guess you gotta cater for the masses if you want to make money.....

They'd ruin it with adding a 'revenge theme' (trademark Hollywood Hacks Inc.) from some random character who we are suppose to know when he reveals he ominously spoken name.

Swellegant. Nice, sweeping image. Feel bad for the poor helmsman who has to keep Rama crawling along at what has to be a painfully slow speed.

What a great scene - all flying along, in peace, enjoying the moment.
The Rama looks brilliant here - and I love the uniforms of the crew. Excellent idea about the portable shield.
You know what I always say about scenes like this about this franchise...

Well "peace"? Easy to say unless you get cause in the wash of one of those beastie's wavin' wings!!!
But that interjected, I rather suspected you'd be on board with this one, my friend. In looking at it I noticed that there's almost nothing the mainstream viewer would see here as Trek... but us in the know (and especially Vanguard readers) will take it in pretty quick. I maintain that the enviro belts are cool and while they may have been created by TAS-driven reasoning, I think they're better/cooler/more tech-appropriate SF. Jack McDevitt has used the same tech in his SF series to great result.
