This photo is simply captivating. I think the greatest part is the black around the model; it gives a sense of a void, as does the black and white photography. He seems to be utterly relaxed, in a sort of dream- or trance-state.

So, yeah, amazing.

You have no idea how close you are to the truth in your statement. He was extremely shy and timid. He came to the shoot with a friend who was pushing him to model. It was at this point in the shoot that he sort of "tranced-out" for 10-15 minutes then woke up and did an extremely beautiful job of modeling. When he saw the final images from the shoot he was ecstatic. It boosted his self image greatly.

I can imagine being timid about modelling; I'm not sure I could bring myself to do it! Good that it boosted his self image, though β€” it's a lovely shot.

*** humble thank you *** this was not acting... the model at this point was reacting to his partner who was at the shoot and encouraging him to do well. I love it when I have the opportunity to capture real emotion... (grin).

I really like the pose and lighting on this one specifically how the contours of the body pull viewers eye through the image. There are only two things that bother me. The first is the crop, it feels like there is a little too much negative space above his head. If the camera had been moved a little more to the right (viewers right) that way the negative space on the left wouldn't feel so jarring and more of the legs would be in the shot. The other thing that is bothering me is that the image feels just a little blurry. Not sure if it is because it was a long exposure and he moved just a little or if the lens was just a hair out of focus. The blur isn't a huge deal I think it is just more that I like things really crisp. Or maybe what is bugging me is that I can just barely make out the hair on his chest and I want it to be a little sharper so it stands out more. Sorry for the winded comment.

Robert-James In reply to emailartist26 [2010-05-25 02:13:22 +0000 UTC]

Very observant and the comment is much appreciated. The cropping (Framing in this case) is something that could have been better. I like to work with my models moving. I never worked posed images. With the constant movement I get a lot of variety but sometimes the framing isn't ideal. I could crop it to remove the negative space. I'll give that some consideration. I like the 1/3's in the shot and removing the negative will change that.

As far as the focus, this is done with 1/80 second shutter and an F3.2 so the Dof is VERY shallow. To compensate I have a post-processing technique that gives a certain texture and improves overall sharpness... BUT you lose the really fine focus needed for hair. As others have described my effect, it gives a velvety/painterly effect to the photo.

I have JUST purchased my first set of Strobes and will try some more traditional photography with them... but I've become so accustomed to this other effect and will probably continue to do both...

Thanks for asking!... and sorry for the long winded reply... (grin).

I kind of figured you were going for the 1/3s layout but wasn't sure. I will interested to see what you do with the new lighting.

Robert-James In reply to FrodoPrime [2010-05-25 02:16:15 +0000 UTC]

This is Kurtis' first modeling experience. We loaded up a bunch of his favorite music in iTunes, started that playing and told him he was "Home Alone"... house all to himself, you're laying on the floor listening to your music and reading some magazines, just do what comes natural.

I like this picture best in the set - the pose of the model and the angle it was taken are unique! =o It kinda makes me wonder if he was standing straight up, or if he was lying down, 'cause it looks like it could be both.
