Description
I've already posted other drawings of Darth Vader, but he's a popular character - and I like drawing him - so I thought it was time to do another!I'd also been wanting to draw some TIE Fighter Pilots and thought up an idea so that I could include them with Vader in the same piece...
If you've seen the original Star Wars movie - you might remember the scene where Vader gets a couple of pilots to follow him into battle against the rebels. I couldn't help think that they took it a little too leisurely as they marched off round the corner like they were heading straight to the fridge for a snack. What they needed was a red flashing emergency light to generate some urgency! So here they are - red light on - and whadya know - they're all running to their ships now!
In reality I just made that up because I wanted to draw the characters in a dynamic pose - and with some red highlights (which always looks good against black). But I hope my little backstory helps sell the idea!
This is an original depiction of George Lucas's characters - drawn in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. I might put up a work-in-progress of this if anyone's interested because I took a couple of screenshots at various stages. You might also find it interesting that I used Google Sketchup to create a 3D model of the background to ensure that the perspective is right (after having sketched it out freehand first). This is a reduced resolution version of the original which is 600dpi.
Hope you like.

I don't normally fave star wars artwork, but those reflections are incredible!

Well the slow march that Vader did seemed more badass but running would be more appropriate indeed
Anyway, it looks amazing, I love the reflections and gloss you applied to the image and the overall gritty look.

Thanks very much Adam. I agree Vader always looks good just marching or standing - but there are loads of pictures of him doing that. So I just like to try and draw him in unexpected scenes and dynamic poses to show that this is all my original work - and that I can create something I hope people find interest.

Yeah it's quite unusual to see Vader doing something in non-humorous artwork - most of the images are of him just standing with the lightsaber. Anyway, I think he was a bit more active in a New Hope and if the old trilogy didn't go darker, he would probably even jump around in the Empire Strikes Back.

Exactly - that's what made me do my Darth Vader on a speeder bike picture. And I like the idea of him jumping around in Empire Strikes Back come to think of it - there is a scene in that movie where he flies! Honest - it's in the fight scene with Luke.

Haha if we take it that way, he does a backflip in Return of the Jedi

He really does fly (well kind of jump) - go to 1:25 here: [link]
Couldn't find a clip of the backflip though!

Awesome piece! I hope you've had a chance to look at LucasArt's upcoming Star Wars: 1313. I think you could do some seriously awesome stuff with that nitty-gritty style!

Hi Kristen - thanks! I remember seeing your journal about your taking a break from Star Wars - does this mean that you're back and 1313 is your next project?

Well I've been writing for TORWars all this time. Too hard to just ditch it all and leave.
Got a new writing gig lined up now though. More art, broader range of games and interests to write about, it'll be fun!
Once I can start making public noise about the site I'll blather on about it where ever I can
There's going to be a new weekly series on gaming fanart. Just sayin'
Take care, keep swinging that paint bucket! <3

Spectacular mate.
This has instantly become one of my faves from you so far... not just because I'm a big Vader fan
Great scene and so brilliantly painted. the level of detail and the use of lighting is so really well done.

Thanks Simon. I appreciate that - I always value your comments. Funny you picked up on the detail - made me think of the last pic I did (the Rancor vs AT-AT) - cos I put about as much detail into the AT-AT drivers in that one but they're much smaller so I think it all gets lost! Not to self - some times less is more!

No worries.
That is an interesting point you raise. I think it probably has something do with the size, also the Pilots in this piece are more of a focal point whereas in the other one the Rancor probably stole a lot of the limelight.

Yeah - I guess it just goes to show how important it is to get the subject matter right in the first place! Easier said than done though eh!

I suppose that was the idea with that one - but what I've gotta do is stop putting so much detail all over the picture when it can't even be seen on here in a tiny jpeg (compared to the original file - which could be blown up to wall size!). Another lesson learned!
