I never liked this scientific explenation of vampires and light. UV light can't be the reason vampires die. Even the moon reflects the light of the sun, so it also reflects uv rays too. Even though the sun provides literally a million times more UV light than the moon does, that still doesn't explain why would vampires get stronger from the moon if UV light hurts them. (some myths say that a vampire is stronger on the moonlight than in a dark room)

I know the reason why many people believe sun light kills vampires. Crispin freeman said in an interview that in the 1922 film nosferatu count orlock did not actually die of the sun he died because the girl gave herself willingly to orlock to stop him from feeding off of Jonathan Harker because the film implies that orlock and Jonathan have a homosexual relationship and that at the time the film was made being gay was a huge taboo. Since she gave herself willingly and was not forced or sedused by orlock the sun came up and he died because of the girls choice. But it's a silent film and sunlight was added to vampire lore later.

It's true, that vampire mythology originally doesn't descibe the sunlight to be deadly to vampires. That's also a reason I like Hellsing that much, but also there are several lores that do mention that vampires are more or even oly active at night. Also there is the belief that the sun represents god's light, that's why some vampire's powers weaken on too much direct sunlight, like they weaken from holy symbols such as the Bible. So even though in folklore vampires are not affraid of sunlight, they connection to it highly influenced their fictional version, long before the Nosferatu movie. Even Bram Stoker's Dracula can walk about in the daylight, in bright sunshine, though apparently without the ability to use most of his powers, like turning into mist or a bat.
