It took me forever to do T^T
The biggest problem is "where to shade and how much" =3=
maybe that goes with experience?

Mostly, only with experience. I watched parts of Alucard in the OVAs over and over again, to see what kind of shading type his coat has.
Then I design the pose and try to figure out how the coat would look like in it.
After I got that, I start shading, (always only a part of the character until it looks good enough and than I move to the next bodypart.
