After depicting the characters from the "Reign of Superman" storyline, I thought I'd take a stab at depicting Azrael from the infamous "Knightfall" storyline. While I really like the storyline, as it does a good job of creating a contrast between a ruthless vigilante like Azrael and Bruce Wayne's "softer" methods, while at the same time showing a slow descent into extremism on Azrael's part, I'm really not a fan of the costume Azrael wears during it.
Granted, it's not a "bad" costume per se. It just doesn't say "Batman" to me. The similarities to Batman's regular suit are there, but largely superficial. There's no identifying symbol or aspect to connect it to the regular Batman suit. Yes, it does look heavily armored, but I think there was perhaps a way to get that look and have a closer design to the original Batman suit. Plus, I think if they were trying to depict a "darker" and "edgier" Batman, the color choices on the costume are very questionable. The dominant color on the costume is yellow, which makes the character look MORE like a standard hero than a dark vigilante. Plus, some parts of the costume- the white belly, the belt on the left leg, the fins on the legs- just seem superfluous and more form than function.
I really think this costume could have used another pass before it debuted.

I think this costume and the later armored version are great if you look at them as "What if Batman were created as a 90s antihero?", but I think it doesn't work at all in most other contexts.
I agree with a lot of your points about the AzBats suits. I'd love to see a talented artist do a ground-up redesign of AzBats, starting with the concept of a more violent, armored Batman. I think the AzBats suit should look like the Batman equivalent of heavy riot gear, something that reflects the excessive brutality of his methods.
Instead, we have something that only makes sense as a product of the 90s. It feels like a jumbled mess of ideas. Why does the heavy armor stop at the ribcage? Why does Jean Paul Valley have shoulder pads on top of shoulder pads?

You know what, I actually preferred this version of the costume to the later one JPV wore. I know the whole point is to out him as an impostor, but I think if it wasn't for the garish color scheme and the ridiculous pouches, this woud have been a decent Bat suit. i think the reason i liked it is because it's a lot like my favorite bat costume, Batman 1 Million. I wish somebody would go back and try to experiment with this some more.

I want Jean Paul Valley back! He'd be great as a ressurected and reprogrammed antagonist for a while (heck, I've outlined a story for that).
I have to agree it doesn't say "BATMAN!"; but in a way it does show how The System the Order of St. Dumas used to train JPV royally messed him up mentall and psychologically. Therefore, he makes a perversion of the Bat outfit to go along with his violations of everything Batman stands for.
