So a while back, there was this discussion on Twitter regarding Electro's design, and how it was kind of wonky. That there were elements of it that were alright, but the rest didn't really quite work. And it was hard to disagree.
Thinking about it, there's a lot of stuff about Electro's design that kind of feel haphazardly applied. Really, the only things that work is the color scheme and the mask. Especially the mask, the mask is the most iconic part of the outfit. It's the thing that makes Electro stand out from all the rest. And it always bugs me to see adaptations lose the mask, which tends to turn Electro into some generic blue guy.
But the rest kind of just seems "There." The yellow trunks kind of seem gaudy and outdated. The yellow "Suspenders" are hard to anchor on the upper body, since they start at the trunks and just kind of "End." The lighting on the leggins also seem weird. Basically, the mask and the colors work, but the rest seem to be just put there for the sake of just having something on the body for color separation, which I think kind of undermines the whole look.
So , with that in mind, I thought to try my hand at redesigning Electro's costume somewhat to try and simplify things. I really wanted to keep a lot of the same elements, just refine them in a way that had them make a little more sense artistically.
First, I kept the mask, of course. I also made the black part of his cowl just a basic hood, and didn't try to connect it to anything. Next I tried to slim things down a bit. I'm a BIG fan of Alex Ross' work, and I love how he usually tries to make simple, basic designs for costumes that don't try to have too much going on, boiling things down to rather iconic elements. So I decided to make the lighting on his chest this have this upward arching patter than connects to his "Belt" area, to give some flare to his chest. Next, I gave him longer "Gloves" and boots that cut higher on the body and had a pattern that arced upwards to stay lost to the pattern established by his previous costume with the lightning on his thighs. I also decided to have the yellow parts of his costume glow when he's "Powered up" to add a bit of visual flare.
I'm kind of happy with the end result. Although it's hardly as if I was coming up with something myself, just refining the work of another, much better artist. Let me know what you think.
