Since I was redoing and older drawing, I decided to take another stab at drawing a previous image of Psylocke that I did....

Anyway, I didn't like it at the time, I REALLY don't like it now, so I decided to do it over again since I hopefully improved since then.

Psylocke has always been a character with a weird history. She was alright until Chris Claremont got his mits on her. Sure, she was involved in some strange stories, but they weren't weird weird. Then Claremont started writing her, and that was when he was starting to get his most Claremont-ey. Chris Claremont started to get really self indulgent deep into his run as the primary X-Men scribe, and as a result you got a heck of a lot more of his fetishes being introduced into the series. Body modification was one of the themes he seemed to use the most, especially with women. Storm was transformed into a child. Calisto was given the face of a supermodel. Meggan and Phoenix over in Excalibur gave him a wealth of opportunities to explore his indulgences. Jean Grey when she got a guest appearance received tentacle arms that she really didn't seem to mind (That later got ported over to Calisto in the 2000's). And then there was Psylocke.

It's almost kind of quaint how "Got turned into an Asian" was somehow not seen as being all that offensive even as recent as the 1980's. Try pulling that nowadays and you'd more than likely receive a firestorm of negative criticism (Most of it probably justified). But then, they managed to just... transform... the Caucasian Betsy Braddock into an Asian. Behind the scenes information does seem to indicate that Claremont never planned on this being a permanent change (Again, he turned Storm into a child and then changed her back later). The problem was that Psylocke's new look was designed by the burgeoning superstar Jim Lee, who made the character instantly iconic and stand out.

That's sort of the tricky thing with Psylocke. Her most well known look, her most iconic outfit, is her as an Asian in a very skimpy outfit. But the road to that look is extremely convoluted and strange. Not to mention that no one has been able to come up with a look for Psyloke that manages to keep her iconic style, but downplays her sexuality. And her popularity as a character means that she can't NOT be used.

So there you go. I really do like the character, and I think that writers have managed to turn what was originally one writer's fetish into something that provided a very interesting character in her own right.

I just don't envy the guy that's got to adapt her to the big screen once it comes her time to join the MCU...
